Hair

I have a few friends who went to Hair last night, and they were bored. Is this a common opinion? From what I've read, it is selling well and is getting a pretty good audience reception. I, for one, can't wait to see it!
So, that was the Drowsy Chaperone. Oh, I love it so much. I know it's not a perfect show...but it does what a musical is supposed to do. It takes you to another world, and it gives you a little tune to carry with you in your head for when you're feeling blue. Ya know?

Lots of opinions in those threads (and a lot of others if you search).

The general consensus is that it's a fantastic revival with a stunningly talented cast...I personally think it just might be the best thing on Broadway right now. I wasn't bored once either time I saw it.

Thanks! I've read alot of reviews, but haven't found many negative ones. Just wanted to see if anyone else could expand on why they may not have liked it. re: Hair

re: Hair

I have seen it 4 times so far, and plan on going back many more times. Not 1 of the 4 times have I been bored. There are a couple people on here who did not like it, but the majority do like it.

re: Hair

I can see how someone could not be into HAIR, but to call it "boring" is simply preposterous as it is one of the most (if not the most) energetic, inspiring, thrilling, and exciting production on Broadway at the time.

re: Hair

I've seen it 7 times and over the summer will go a hundred more times. And yes I can see how you could not like it but boring? There is no way anyone can be bored at that show. Especially since they're rubbing on you half of the time.

re: Hair

To each his own. What shows DO they like? That could explain a lot.

But yes, MOST of us think it's a amazing and agree it's the best thing on B'way right now..
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

re: Hair

I agree with everybody else: I can see how it wouldn't be somebody's cup of tea, but BORING? I. Think. Not.

re: Hair

Including the park and broadway, I have seen it 13 1/2 times.
While I find it unlikely, I can see why a few people woudn't enjoy themselves, but it is as far from boring as a show can get.

re: Hair

Actually I heard exactly the same thing from friends of mine who, like me, remember seeing the original production. They said this felt like a lot of kids in costumes and wigs, pretending to be hippies. The difference was that when we were 18, that's the way we really looked and acted. There was no pretense and no false ideologies. This felt watered down and weak in comparison. They were MAJORLY disappointed.

re: Hair

I feel this amazing production is the opposite of boring.

And I saw the original many times.

re: Hair

This is my favorite show of the year and have enjoyed the 4 times I have seen it. It's incredible and even if you didn't like it I have no idea how one can be bored.

re: Hair

I lived through that era too. I dressed and acted like that. I sort of remember the Acid trips in the park... Wasn't bored in the least, of course with the draft (for now) being a thing of the past, the receiving of the draft card and the subsequent burning of said card, loses a bit of it's impact.
God, I remember the day, moment and hour that envelope showed up in my mailbox with the salutation: Greetings!....
Never the less I have enjoyed the show nine times total so far, each time seeing people I know from the past reflected in little things members of the Tribe do. Never once bored.

edited to add, I recently threw out my suede vest with the fringe!!! It had finally succumb to age.

I have seen it twice already and would love to see it again!! I don't know why they could ever be bored, it was great.

re: Hair

Mamie, I find your comment interesting since several of the characters have very questionable ideologies, especially Berger. He makes a lot of fuss about being a part of the movement, but I get the feeling that he just wants to be a rebel and shock the world. I don't think he legitimately cares.

Meanwhile, other characters (like Shelia, for instance), have very strong convictions.

re: Hair

The scene immediately following the trip to me speaks volumes about the piece and these young ideologues... suddenly, they aren't filled with love, as we see Woof being turned down by Dionne and Chrissy, and the only solution Sheila provides for Claude is to yip out the bad vibes, while Berger can't even try to offer a solution. It's a really tragic scene, if you think about it. It stood out to me both times I saw this production.

But I digress. I don't see how anyone can find the show "boring".

re: Hair

Kad, I completely agree. I was so taken with how the characters were not played/written as either jokes or saints. Though the show obviously has some sensational elements, the "haggle of hippi" really do feel like actual human beings. I loved that they were treated in such an objective light.
#22

re: Hair

Mamie, you do know that the original cast were not hippies picked up off the street, right?
They were also wearing wigs and costumes and were acting.
The show is about capturing the energy of the times, as most period shows are.
One of the most thrilling aspects of this revival is how Paulus cast an amazing group of actor/singer/groovers who, like the original cast, many are doing their first Broadway show, yet their individuality and their Tribeness are a perfect match.
PEACE OUT!

re: Hair

Hasn't Rado gone on record saying that some of the original cast were in fact recruited off the street? They couldn't find the voice types they wanted from the trained singers they were auditioning.
I understand this might very well be creative lore but that is what he has been saying in recent interviews.

re: Hair

I've heard that some of them were picked off of the streets. I know the original Chrissy (Shelley Plimpton) was reportedly one of those lucky people.

People think I'm crazy for finding SITPWG boring.
