re: Hairspray

Hairspray would be huge in Australia but I find it strange they haven't considered mounting an production in Sydney or Melbourne since it has been success elsewhere.

re: Hairspray

I couldn't agree more...so what is stopping them?

re: Hairspray

It hasn't always been the success we see in London- Toronto and South Africa came and went rapidly with a great loss of cash!
BUT i agree, if 'Hairspray' let its hair down anywhere it should be down under!
May I offer an example -'Priscilla'!!! -they love a bit of camp!
(I've seen quiet a few productions in Melboune and Sydney of major shows and mostly they are as good as or sometimes better than London and New York!)

A young actress with Noel coward after a dreadful opening night performance said to him 'Well, i knew my lines backwards this morning!'' Noels fast reply was ''Yes dear, and thats exactly how you said them tonight'!'

re: Hairspray

Are there any available theatres in Sydney or Melbourne big enough to mount Hairspray? Melbourne currently has Wicked at the Regent Theatre while Jersey Boys is going to The Princess and Billy Elliot going to Her Majesty's while Sydney has High School Musical going to The Capitol followed by a limited run of Guys and Dolls and then the Australian premiere of Mary Poppins. I would guess that Hairspray could go to The Lyric in Star City Sydney if they to mount a production in 2009/10.

I would think that feelgood shows like Hairspray or Priscilla are more likely to seen by audiences to escape the doom and gloom that is going on in society.

re: Hairspray

'Hairspray' isn't that huge, yes its a very big show but it doesn't demand a huge stage. Both Sydney and Melbourne have theatres that are more than capable of a major staging. Its a shame its not on the schedule down there but then London waited 5 years!

re: Hairspray

I feel like if the show was successful in Toronto it would have gone to London a lot quicker then it did. I sort of feel that based upon how the show did in Toronto they were feeling that they were taking a bit of a risk by opening it up in London. Clearly a risk that was worth taking based upon how well this show is doing in London.

It was worth the wait to have Mr Ball and to kill off the Shaftesbury curse and not to have to compete with Billy and Wicked in the awards.

re: Hairspray

Why did the Hairspray go belly up in Toronto, I refuse to believe that Canadians are boring and do not like to have a big party, was the show not well produced?
#37

re: Hairspray

I think the producers were blind to what was going on in Toronto during the time of Hairspray's run. When Hairspray was there the city was going through a SARS outbreak which meant that tourists weren't visiting Toronto. You have to realize that Toronto generally has the same kind of audiences that Broadway gets so if a show is doing well in Toronto there is a good chance that it will do well on Broadway.

The SARS reason was the main one. I honestly think that the producers were looking at the fact it flopped and they weren't paying attention to WHY it flopped. I think that they saw it as a production that flopped and that made them a little scared to go to London right away which is why they waited as long as they did.

re: Hairspray

Winston is right, no one has challenged his believe, shows how volatile the show is if such a minor issue as SARS can affect it.

Unfortunately this show will not go back to Toronto, not because it is a bad show, but because there was a third party influence and producers would be scared to do an open ended run.

Do you see the show coming back to Toronto?

re: Hairspray

I don't think they will go back to Toronto. I think that as far as the producers are concerned they tried it and it failed. Now, if they looked at what was going on and how SARS scared a lot of people both in the city of Toronto and how it scared people from visiting it that year, then maybe things would be different.

I think that when it comes to international productions of either London or Broadway shows there are reasons behind why a show flops if it in fact does flop. However, most producers only care about the fact that it did flop and don't really spend a lot of time looking at what they could have done wrong or what was going on in the city that the show was playing in at the tie that impacted ticket sales.

re: Hairspray

Wickedboy made a great point, which was; 'All in the casting'. As you have worked out that Wickedboy and I are massive fans of this show and think it will run for a very long time, however Michael Ball cannot stay forever, no doubt he is a big factor in the shows success and as WB stated; 'All in the casting', so throw your hats in, when Michael Ball does finally leave who would make the next perfect Edna?

I feel that Barry Humphries would be great as he has a pedigree of musical theatre and cross dressing.

re: Hairspray

Wickedboy!!!! Now repeats something else he said 'close it at 2yrs on a high, its been done before'

re: Hairspray

I feel this could close in 50 years on a high, best show in the West End, Best show on Broadway, simplier the best show ever!!!

But as a said earlier Michael Ball will not be in the show for ever, who could be the next Edna?

re: Hairspray

I got a funny feeling, and its not from any source, its just my own feeling, they may go for an American name!
Gerge Wendt from 'TVs 'Cheers' for example!
I really don't know but pretty soon a lot of serious names will have to be spoken about!

re: Hairspray

I feel like with any show there are people who say that it isn't going to do well once the original cast leaves. I doubt that this is a new thing to happen with Hairspray. I am sure that they will find someone else to play the role.

I have a question because I just don't know. Is the name Michael Ball known to people in England who don't follow musical theatre? Because there are performers in America who do theatre who people would people who don't follow musical theatre or theatre in general would know. These are people who for the most part can't tell you who they saw as Elphaba in Wicked during their last trip in the city. But, they know that Nathan Lane is staring in that new play.

But, back to what I was originally saying, I can't count the number of times I have heard that the because the original cast opened a show then they MUST be the best etc etc. I have always said after a show has run for a number of years that there is a chance that there could be a replacement who is better then the original. Granted, I am not just talking about Hairspray in London or any London show. I have heard theatre fans say the same thing for Broadway shows as well.

I just hope that Hairspray in London can reach the six year mark without having to stunt cast. Unfortunately that is not the case for Broadway.

re: Hairspray

Yes Michael Ball is known outside of the theatreworld, his eurovision entry and recording career helped make him a household name.

Now he has a radio show on sundays (hence taking mondays off from the show) he's a regular on the chat show circuit. Probably one of the few theatre stars joe public will have heard of.

re: Hairspray

Winston he is huge with concert dates, TV his own radio program etc etc never ending. That is why everyone is amazed that he hasn't been been caught on a London Cast Recording. That is what we have been saying for months when you go on about not doing one saying it wouldn't sell against the Broadway Cast Recording!
#48

re: Hairspray

The incredibly long extension on his contract is testimony to his popularity. Even during his run with the show he is not performing on many dates due to prior bookings of TV and live concerts all arranged ages ago, some before Hairspray opened a year ago- yes, he's that popular!
