What an AMAZING performance! The show is completely different from when I saw it a few months ago--the only differences in the cast being Tracy and Edna. Harvey and Marissa were INCREDIBLE and the audience was SO energetic! The cast was definitely feeling the energy and loving it. There were a few... unexpected things last night in act 1 too:
In the scene where Tracy is getting her phone call from Mr. Pinky, Marissa said the line, "Well, I'm afraid all business matters must go through my agent," or something--but her diction wasn't up to Harvey's standards, so when she got off the phone, Harvey replied, "Oh... but I'm afraid I don't know any ASIANS..." The audience went nuts.
Mr. Pinky came out... REALLY came out in Welcome to the 60's, playing the character ESPECIALLY... over the top, I'll say. He made everyone on that stage laugh, including Harvey and Marissa.
Harvey, towards the end of act 1, called Motormouth Maybelle, "Miss Mocha-chino."
I noticed during Run and Tell That when Inez came forward that Marissa SPRINTED back to her spot from somewhere offstage when Inez said, "I thought I saw Tracy..." Marissa came back on and said her lines and then snuck back offstage. She came back on again at the end of Run and Tell That, I think it was, and I noticed lots of people were talking to her--I noticed Penny saying, "Are you ok?" to her. Marissa kept going--it seems like no one else could tell that she was sick. I noticed that she started looking a little pale and I was really nervous for her--but she kept going.
I was talking to my roommate during intermission and said that I thought Marissa was sick and predicted that we'd have a different Tracy for act 2.. and we did. They made the announcement that Annie Funke would be on as Tracy in Act 2. Act 2 was still great. I would have loved to have seen Marissa finish act 2 (she was spectacular in act 1), but Annie did a great job. When the announcement was made that Annie would be playing Tracy, the audience seemed a little upset, but after Good Morning Baltimore (Reprise), Annie got a GREAT amount of applause and cheers.
The audience was really great last night--applauding and cheering right when the overture began--so much better than when I saw it last, which can definitely make a show enjoyable or not.
If you are able to see the show again before it closes, PLEASE go now. It's in incredible shape right now (unlike 2 months ago). Harvey and Marissa should NOT be missed!
