i dont know what to think about it, though i'm sure since they did cast her as penny, she will do the role justice...i'm sure they wouldn't cast a COMPLETELY tone deaf person in the role...and i'm sure she can pull the comedy off--though it seems she tries a little too hard sometimes
I think she'll be ok acting it. I'm not sure though. And singing, I dont know since I've never heard her.
I was watching Mean Girls the other day and for some reason I kept seeing Lacey Chabert as Penny. Can anyone else see this?
yes I could see Lacey as penny. I know Lacey sings aswell.
who knows... "brenda?" hehehee jk

I would really love it if the role was played by DeGarmo as well--she was my favorite penny by far!
Shannon got an offer, I don't know if she accepted it. The rest of the council members were cast from Broadway and the tour.
well thats exciting news!
I can think of no reason she wouldn't accept such an offer...
OT: shesamarshmallow, did you go to La Reina?

I can definitely see Amanda Bynes in the role.

No offense to Jibson... but Durig has a face the screen would love.
With offense to Jibson, Durig is actually good-looking. I look at Carly Jibson and see someone trying to cry and smile at the same time. I'd go with Durig, as she definitely has the Tracy look, even when not compared with Jibson.
Also, if it's down to those two, so much for open auditions!! Hah.
The casting of Amanda Bynes, who is 20 but still looks 16, indicates the producers are going for youthful casting of the teens. I see that many of you are hoping that girls who played on Broadway would get the part of Tracey, but both Misses Jibson and Durig, while still in their early 20's look much more mature their faces up on a 60 foot wide screen would look pretty ridiculous against Amanda Bynes. This may be the ravings of a heritic, but they may be planning to go with someone very young who's never spent a year in the role on Broadway.
Just an idea...
well yes, I believe thats why they had open calls.
- and they have had plenty of screentests with most of the girls... so I am sure age and how they look are huge factors.
I wouldnt mind an unknown at all. I have afeeling the studio had a problem with it - and thats wht they went from casting calls to auditioning past show performers.

Miss Jibson was 19 when she was in Hairspray. How old could she possibly be now? 21?
But she looks a lot older. Shannon Durig at least looks 16, and doesn't look as thevolleyballer put it like someone trying to cry and smile at the same time.

believe me, I love Shannon, shes great, but Ive always felt that Carly came off as the youngest Tracy. *shrug*
Here's a photo of Carly Jibson from Playbill. She looks a bit older in this photo than when she was onstage in Hairspray. And since she's playing, what, a girl of 17-18, that could be a real problem. It's already necessary to suspend disbelief twice in this movie, first that a man plays a woman and second that John Travolta is a better choice than Harvey Firstein., so the producers may not want to do it thrice.
That is quite possibly one of the scariest things I have seen in a long time
i love Shannon to death and i've never seen Carly go on, but i have met her away from the theater scene and Carly is definitely young looking, even though it doesnt look it in the pic.
Carly reminds me a lot of that little girl that's in love with Kermit..I forget her name...

I think Carly is very pretty and I also think she is better then Shannon but thats just me I guess...and Mistress yea she does look really young in that picture. I think everything about Carly was better. Her voice, her ACTING, her dancing. Shannon IS good though.

this going back to Michelle Phieffer's singing voice. She sang in Prince of Egypt in the When You Believe duet in the movie and she sounded really good. so she can sing.
as for Amanda, I'm not so sure if she can do it but you'll never know. And I would love for this casting to be done as well.
Carly was a great Tracy... I describe her as a "firecracker" on stage.
If a rumor about one person being cast can stir up this much of a response... I cant wait to see what happens when the entire cast is announced.
I still wish they would cast Goldie Hawn and Kate Hudson as Velma and Amber.
*sigh*
or how 'bout Tori Spelling and on tv mom- Loni Anderson ^^ hahaha jk
(sorry but when i watch So NoTORIous thats all i think about)
My vote is Mandy Moore for Amber. God shed be great.
