If some of you are worried about Shannon and Carly looking too old, what about the assertion that the rest of the film is rounded out with cast members from the tour and Broadway? The majority of them are pushing 30, and look it. No complaints there?? On that note, I really hope they cast Shannon, she is by far the best choice.
This is why most of the world hated Rent. It looked totally ridiculous to see people in their 30's playing kids in their early 20's. Idina is 34, Taye Diggs is 36, Jessie Martin is 38, Adam Pascal 36, Anthony Rapp is 35. Rosario Dawson was the youngest cast member at 27.
Sixty-foot-wide screen, folks. We're not talking a 15 to 20 foot separation from the actors here like on stage. We are going to be up their noses counting hairs. Kate Hudson? God, she's 27 and looks it. And Goldie, up close, looks like most of your grandmothers.
If you REALLY want to destroy another wonderful show, go ahead and do so, validate the wrong-headed decisions of producers (who actually do visit sites like this to see how "the public" is dealing with the rumors they are floating. I know this because I'm one of those cretins) as they cast this show ten years too old and then wonder why audiences stay away.
Say what you will about Phantom of the Opera but at least the little girl in the corps de ballet who is elevated to lead singer at least, with Emmy Rossum LOOKED like she could actually be in the corp de ballet.
I just hope that we get a real surprise here because if we don't, it'll be lonely in that theater. I was the only person in the theater watching Rent (and, sadly, only one of three watching the Producers). I still have hopes....

so very doom and gloom of you. people in their thirties playing twenties and people in their twenties playing teens is a long standing movie habit having nothing at all to do with musicals.
In a movie it really just matters that everyone who is about the same age, looks about the same age. As long as theyre consistent in the age that they appear, itll work. (like Wild Things, Footloose & yes Grease- all teens played by much older actors) And I would guess that they have their Tracy picked if theyve already got a Penny because Tracy would be the one to cast around.

Most teenage characters in films are played by 20 somethings.. its just the way it is.
on the topic of casting bway and touring company people as council members for the film.. well of course they are going to cast the younger looking ones... as much as id love it- your never going to see John Hill up there on the screen reprising his role of fender.
If you take the cast of Mean Girls... Rachel McAdams was 27 when she filmed Mean Girls. and I say she was a convincing 16 year old.
Because I am very into 'visuals' I made this... and I say she looks like a Penny.
I included a 'har -de- har' background that I made for the film (ironically) awhile back ^^

Amanda can act but again her singing is suspect. The movie version Penny is not a very dominent role and if I remember barely sings so since movies are lipsynched they can have someone else sing for her or the engineers can fix it in the recording studio.
As far as credibility about the quality it should be noted that New Line owns both the Broadway and movie rights. They also did the last GOOD moviec production of a musical Chicago. They are sticking to the same formula the same behind the camera people and the same location. It will be shot in Toronto starting in September and the soundtrack will be again done at the Metalworks studios in Mississauga On.New Line has a winning track record and have learned if it works don't mess with it.
HAIRSPRAY is a satire, much like GREASE which also used adult actors as teens; it's a deliberate choice - very different from the leads in RENT being a decade too old.
Most of the "teens" in the original film of HAIRSPRAY weren't actual teens either. Let's not forget the source material: John Waters, who isn't exactly going for realism.
I found all the wigs in Hairspray to be very realistic.
well, Its offical!

I'm sort of confused about Billy Crystal cast as Wilbur. Every other website (i.e. Playbill, Broadway.com) does not mention him as cast. Is he official?
Some sites mention Billy and some do not. I really do not know if he is a official.
and I know if i was directing I would definetly be calling her to make a cameo, as well as John Waters.
Okay yeah she looks the part, and is very funny, but she sure as hell better be able to sing or I'm gonna be really angry.
They really need to make a good casting desion, before they loose all the fans of the show, I've meet the director and a few of the producers and they seem like very nice guys, but they really need to kick it into gear... and you know what I'm done ranting! I'm sure the movie is going to be fine, I'm just getting a little nervous.

If Ricki was still young enough she could still play Tracy, even in the musical version. I heard her sing one time on a talk show, (Rosie O. I think?) and she has a great voice!
I had the opportunity to spend a little bit of time recently with Ricki Lake. (She's fantastic, by the way) She was saying that most people don't know that she started out as a singer. Growing up, that's what she wanted to do. She also mentioned that at one point there was talk of her going into the Vegas company as Tracy for a short stint. She also mentioned that, as of this point, there was no cameo planned or necessarily desired in the film. But she's seen the show a few times, and loves it. It was a fun afternoon getting to hear her stories.
ricky needs to be in the film. write her a bit Marc!
- John Waters should also reprise his role in the movie- but instead of being a radio anchor or a hypnotist... as either a news reporter on the television, the flasher next door or the bum on his bar stool (jk, but hey! hed love it.)
John Waters as the flasher next door would be priceless!
it would be a great moment!

I'd love to see john waters and ricky lake make cameos in the movie. I know Waters has always done so with his movies. Hopefully, this is no exception

I'm a little upset that my mother and I wasted a lot of money to go to the goddam open call.
