Was it for a dancer or tracy?

You are not the first to have spent a lot of money on getting to open calls and nothing coming from it, and you certainly wont be the last. But keep trying! ^^

Tracy... it just got me so angry because my mother and I had to make a lot of sacrifices (monetarily) to go. If they really cast someone from the calls I wouldn't regret it but if it ends up to just be some mass marketing ploy then I will (and currently am) be very, very upset. I've been to other open calls but at least those weren't used to stir up publicity.

On a lighter note, I am very happy about Amanda Bynes being cast but really want to hear her sing now.

Am I cut out to spend my time this way?

I doubt it was a complete "publicity stunt" because they wouldn't spend that much time and money searching all of the US, going to England and Australia just to pre-promote the movie.

I believe they were and possibly still are searching for an unknown. And say if Shannon or someone else from Broadway gets the role, its because they didnt find what they were looking for in the open calls and/or the studio wanted someone who could handle the job.

The theme park scene in the original Hairspray movie was filmed at our local amusement park. I remember vividly in high school, there was a casting call for extras for those scenes. I knew quite a few kids who went to be part of the crowd.
Unfortunately, the amusement park no longer looks like it did then....now it's all modern and huge with a water park! LOL!

on spending to much money to go to an open call...i live in scotland and sent 2 tapes to LA, and went to london twice to audition, and I'm a poor poor american student living on nothing and the dollar isn't doing so well, so it was mad money for me, but I gotta say, being asked to go to London to do a screen test for a movie was like the highlight of my year!!! in the end my tape wasn't passed on coz i guess I looked to old on film (i'm 24) but i just think it's coz it was ****. oh man,was so bad, i'm ashamed that it it out there for people to look at! ha!
but I'm excited to see how this whole thing turns out!

Sorry the file is sooo big, but is the girl they cast as Tracy the chubby one in the front in the purple shirt? I did a search for her in Google images and thats the pic that showed up.
