There was no memo- just common sense.
What is ironic about them being released on the same date is that a homophobic film is being released on the same day as Hairspray.
I saw the movie last night, and it was basically my first exposure to the musical. It isn't my favorite, but it was a lot of fun and I liked the performances. I thought that Nikki and Zac were great, and Travolta was good but a little...too much/awkward, sometimes, but I'm guessing that's more an issue with the character than the performance. Allison Janney nearly stole the movie for me in her small role.
I was not a fan of the musical really - I think the cast was just not with it the night I saw it. I've always found the score to be the strongest part, though with the exception of a couple of the songs not really one I would have called my favorite. That said, I LOVED the movie. I thought the performances were universally strong - in fact, I would be hard pressed to find a fault with it. I was thoroughly entertained for two hours, and had a smile on my face for almost the whole thing - honestly, my face HURT at the end of the movie from laughing and smiling so much.
Definitely a great time at the movies - I'm VERY glad I took a break from Harry Potter to go see it!

Am I the only person who completely hated it?

ben4 i am totally with you. by the way i am not homophobic.
Well I can't say i hated it.. however frankly I did not love the movie.
When I saw the musical on Broadway, I had a big smile on my face from beginning to end. Lots of laughs. Lots of chuckles. Lots of surprises. I did not feel that way about the movie. I did not fall in love with the Tracy the way I fell in love with Tracy in the stage version.
There were things I liked about the movie. I thought Michelle Pfeiffer and Queen Latifa were terrific. I found the entire cast first rate especially Seawood, Inez, Penny, Penny's Mom, Corny Collins and Link. Nikki Blonsky was servicable but not as good as the Broadway Tracy and not as endearing as Ricki Lake--but fine.
The only major castimg mistake was Travolta's interpretation of Edna--unfunny and awkward with a really annoying accent. Why was he the only one in the film with a Baltimore accent? I missed the outright guffaws I got from Divine and Fierstein. The only laugh I got from Travolta was when he said "you forgot to eat?" I also missed Edna coming out of the can of Hairspray. I also missed Edna becoming a blonde. It's almost as if the director said well he isn't that good so let's not give him those shining moments that worked so well on stage and switch the focus to Latifah and Pfeiffer--who were admittedly strong!
I feel Pfeiffer and Latifah as good as they were helped the director steal the focus too much away from Blonsky and Travolta. A casting mistake. A direction mistake.
I enjoyed the art direction, the choreoraphy and the period and the hair. I can't explain why the movie left me a little cold except that perhaps the change of focus (Pfeiffer and Latifah)
and the awkwardness of Travolta distracted me.
My favorite part of the film was the end credits which contained "Mama I'm a Big Girl Now" and "Cooties" with some great animation. To me that was the most creative part of the film.
I missed Tracy singing the first verse of Good Morning Baltimore singing it in her bed although I respect how he openned it up. I just wish he openned it up a verse later. I missed "Mama I'm a Big Girl Now." The film just did not involve me the way the Broadway Version did and the original version did but yet I respected what the director did with the work. But something is amiss with the "do" and I have to blame it on the casting and focus.
I have to say although I did not hate it.... I was disappointed.

don't be mean about it, I just want to know. Hairspray mentions nothing about being gay or homophobia - what do they have anything to do with eachother??

^^^ someone please answer that question for me

Lizzy - because HAIRSPRAY is a film about acceptance of others made primarily by gay men.

Not that I'm saying Chuck and Larry is a good film (although I do plan on seeing it with my friends), but I don't think it's an overall homophobic film. There may be jokes done in bad taste, but from what I heard, the film has pro-tolerance intentions...almost to the point of it being a 2 hour long PSA for the gay community.

What Wonderful Wizard said and that it is a MUSICAL.
I've never seen it on stage, but I had the cast recording and I absolutely loved it. The most thoroughly enjoyable film I've ever seen.

omg get over it tapioca
I totally agree, raviloisun! I get to see it again this weekend and it's driving me crazy waiting! I'm just listening to the CD over and over. I don't have the OBCR but I listened to bits on iTunes and really don't like it, I like the film soundtrack much better! I'm so happy other people enjoyed the movie as much as me = )
