I just got back from seeing the movie "Hairspray" and it is soo amazingly good, I strongly recommend going to see it! I have never seen the Broadway show or the original film, so I'm glad I went into it with no pre-existing ideas. It is definetely in my top 5 favorite films of all time! I hope it gets awards, it really deserves them. Go see it!!

Hate to sound like a goony fanboy, but it was one of the best films I've ever seen. I don't think they could have done any better!

Anyone else find it really ironic that HAIRSPRAY is coming out the same day as CHUCK AND LARRY?

I am not a huge fan of the stage musical (though I love the music and choreography) and I must say that I loved the movie. I saw it today and loved every minute of it. The cast is incredible. Nikki Blonsky is the best Tracy I've seen, and Queen Latifah was especially great. If they replaced the Broadway cast with the movie cast, it would be way better. This is definitely one of thos movies that I add to my short "is better than the stage version" list. It goes right next to Chicago.

i didnt like it at all. only a few parts...run and tell that, good morning baltimore, some of without love i just mean seaweed/penny.

zac sucked, john t didnt impress me.
cant say about janney she had little to say in the film.
brittany snow, elijah kelly, queen latifah, amanda bynes and of course nikki blonsky were standouts for me.

some songs were out of order, left out mama i'm a big girl now....load of people were disguested about that. cooties left out.

go c the broadway show or tour 5 stars and the remake of the movie 2 stars.

I agree! It was fantastic! NOTHING like the stage show (save the music) or its original predecessor but still VERY good. Ms. Blonsky...Nikki has a HUGE career ahead of her. She was the best Tracy I have ever seem minding the fact I have only seen 3 (Marissa, Shannon, and of course Ricki). But hands down the best out of all of them. I must also take note of John Travolta: he was good, but there were points in which his performance fell flat. Don't get me wrong, he has his glorious moments where I forgot he was John Travolta but there were others where what I saw was John Travolta playing Edna Turnblad and not just Edna Turnblad. Overall, however, very well done.

Oh and Zac Efron impressed me too with what little-they-left-of-an-already-thankless-character-and-then-tried-to-beef-up-the-little-they-had.

bhj I agree with everything you say, BUT the best Tracy will always be Carly Jibson in my book, superior to all the others, even than Niki, who is perfection.
What a great movie, I saw it tonight for the 2nd time.
I kinda wanna go see it again, guys, go see it, let's make this movie a big hit!
I am a little bummed because Im sure that Harry Potter will still be the # 1 movie of the week, and The Simpsons opens next week. So Hairspray has a few chances to do well with such tough competition.

I thought is was really good, but I have to go see it again, as last night the sound was so off, whenever someone starting singing it sounded like the sound tracks had dirt and scratches. So it kind of ruined the movie, but what I saw I was so pleased with.

I absolutely LOVED it! I too had no knowledge of the film or stage version prior to seeing it - which was a cool way to see it. Michelle Pfeiffer (Sp?) was absolutely phenomenal, as were Queen Latifah and Nikki Blonsky - I hope she sticks around for a good long while.

Did anyone else think that when Nikki Blonsky comes in at the end for You Can't Stop the Beat that she looked like Rikki Lake with her straight hair?

Oh and yankees1253, if you had stayed for the credits you would have received both a version of Momma I'm a Big Girl Now, and Cooties. I don't think cutting them from the plotline of the movie was a crime, they wouldn't have fit in. When you make a movie, some sacrifices have to be made.

I thought Zac was perfect! It was irritating when all of the little 9-year-old girls screamed whenever he came on screen, though. But I think he has a lot of potential to be a really great prominent actor in the business. And Nikki, I just loved her! That would be incredible if this cast were to take to the Broadway stage, I would do just about anything to go to NY and see that.

I absolutely ADORED IT!
I was one of the ones who were skeptical at first too...
John Travolta... though I don't believe he sung the part very well, I thought he was absolutely ADORABLE! I can see why people wouldn't like him though. Christopher Walken was incredible! Nikki Blonsky... absolutely no words for how AMAZING this girl is!
I was very impressed with most of the cast...
except Amanda Bynes... not the strongest singing voice... and it was hard for me (as a big Kerry Butler fan) to accept her... especially since not a whole lot of her character was brought to the film. There were times that she made me laugh though.
There were instances in this film where I was almost on the ground I was laughing so hard... and for that, I give it two thumbs way up.

I really enjoyed the movie and MOST of the changes made from stage to film. I was rather surprised that John T was so funny in the role, I went in thinking I would hate him, but I really found his performance heartfelt and remarkable. For me the standouts in the film are Elijah and Michelle. These two really rocked the film for me. I am glad that they emphazized storylines not really strongly approached on stage and I loved the rearranged music. I loved the mother, daughter story line and got a tear in my eye at the end of "Welcome to the 60's"

Now my dislikes:

Alison Janney's part too small!

Amanda as Penny...ugh! Everytime that I have seen the stage show, Penny pretty much is the funniest character, who steals every scene she is in. I understand they had to tone her down for the movie, but she might as well of not even been there. Her funny lines were hardly heard due to her soft voice and loud music, and her character had no development. Penny is suppose to come out of her nerdy mold by the end of the show and have this huge voice....Amanda was pretty through the entire movie and her voice was dull dull dull...

I can understand cutting "I'm a Big girl Now" but the whole changing of the march and Tracy hiding at Pennys instead of doing the "Big Dollhouse" I feel was a mistake. I think "Dollhouse" would have been an upbeat number for all the characters to do together and could have been a very funny moment in the film. Also they could have kept "Without Love" the same, because I hated the way it was done.

And one last thing...the ending, was so long!

I'm so glad that they weren't going for realism. It truly created its own world. As a result, it didn't feel weird when people started singing for no reason.

we went today & loved it...i started crying even before the first song & then i cried all the way thru (happy tears!). i was all choked up thinking about how this story & these characters have come so far, from the original movie, to the musical, to the musical movie.

i had some minor quibbles but they are completley eclipsed when i think of the joy & happiness this movie is gonna bring to people all over the world.

i know here on BWW we think of the movie from a Broadway-centric viewpoint, but i am thinking of all the people all over the planet who will see this movie; the people who will never even have a chance to come to the united states, LET ALONE see a Broadway show.

HAIRSPRAY will do more to re-build the united states' image around the globe than anyone in the White House ever will.
