Kathy Brier was great.
Saw Marissa Jarret-Winokur perform "You Can't Stop the Beat" with the cast at Broadway on Broadway the year before I actually saw the show and didn't think much of her then, but it was the middle of Times Square on a rainy Sunday, so maybe that was clouding my judgment. Anywho, my vote goes to Ms. Brier.

I saw both Marissa and Shoshana...I liked both of them
Marissa for being an AMDA alum and just the sheer thrill of seeing a new Tony winner perform her starring role
wasn't that much of a fan of her nasal-ness
Saw Shoshana on a Wed. Mat. and thought she was simply amazing. Her voice was just to die for...her rendition of Good Morning Baltimore (reprise) is unforgetable,..,one of those things that if I am quite and focus I can still see her and hear her
love her

Carly is becoming the next Donna Murphy...and not in a good way.
She was out a significant portion of last week and is set to be out all this week.
Looks like it's gonna be Shannon's time to shine fairly soon...and well deserved.
BTW, my fave Tracy was without a doubt Kathy Brier. Shoshana is crazy amazing and can sing like nobody's business, but I was not a fan of her Tracy. Sure it's fun to hear the Sho riffed take on the songs, but she didn't have the jubilance, naivete, or comedic skills to be the "best" Tracy. Plus, anytime it's a fully padded Tracy, it just never seems right.
Carly is the maniacal Tracy, and while she does have a mean belt, her head voice is withering away. Just see how long it takes her to prepare in the end of the Good Morning, Baltimore Reprise, at the transition between "cha cha right out of that door, the world's gonna wake up and see....." which she belts out, to her weak head voiced "Link's in love with me." Some people seem to think it's a character choice she's made, to make it sound emotional. It's not. The same thing happens at the end of "I Can Hear The Bells".

As far as I know, Katy G. left the show in early-mid 2003. I don't think she went on very often, as Kathy Brier was brought in as Marissa's stand-by at least a few months before she took over in August of 2003.
Sho was the understudy the whole time she was with the show (Aug 2002-Apr 2004), and her first time going on as Tracy was in January of 2003.
From what I've heard, many people really liked Katy G's performance, except some producers just weren't on the same page.

And how do you know this? She's been doing that since she was on tour.

Posted: 5/12/05 at 5:22pmMarrisa is by far the best. She is Tracey. Tracey is the absolute underdog she shouldn't have a "mean belt" Marrisa was the real deal and she deserves all the success she is having.

Posted: 5/13/05 at 11:00amLittlewing, what ShoshananBeanieBaby meant is that she thinks Marissa was the best because she had the weakest singing voice out of all the Tracys. She doesn't think that the character should have what I called a "mean belt" (ie, strong, clear, ringing belt with overtones)because she is the 'underdog'. Don't worry though, her logic makes no sense.

Posted: 5/14/05 at 12:31amI've only seen Marissa and Katrina Dideriksen. I absolutely ADORED Katrina. Fabulous voice, great actress, cute as a button. I always found Marissa's voice quite grating.
