Hmmm...
Having seen all of the Broadway Tracys each more than once, I must say that Kathy was my least favorite by a long shot. I never warmed to her take on the role; she always struck me as a little too conniving and out for herself. (Just my opinion, please don't hurt me! re: Hairspray the musical movie...)
Now, I loved (and will always love) Marissa; but Carly was just the sweetest, cutest, most bubbly Tracy I could have ever hoped to see. And (what a concept!) she's about the right age! Which I do realize doesn't mean too much on stage, but on film age definitely shows. Just take a look at Marissa's "Beautiful Girl".
At any rate, I appreciate them all, but my vote goes for Carly.

Love,
Joshie

wow i just imdb-ed them. kathy is in fact younger than marissa; but, when i saw marissa in the role, i thought, "omg what a cute little pudge", when i saw kathy, i thought, "OMG, WHY IS LINK KISSING HIS MOTHER!??!?"

and as millie_dill said, "It's not about age, it's about talent and THE LOOK!"

so unless they want to give hairspray a mrs. robinson-esque spin, i dont think kathy would be a good move.

and as far as it being ok for her to look worn out bc she was juggling a lot, i apologize. i didnt realize its ok for someone to look tired even though its THEIR JOB to play a character as perky and exuberant as tracy turnblad. i guess for paying $100 i was expecting something of higher quality.

Sorry, joining this thread late. I've never seen the show, but casting Aretha Franklin or Patti LaBelle would be a boost in ticket sales. Plue, they obviously have the vocals to pull ANYTHING off.

Harvey HAS to be Edna, its HIS show. Some famous stars will have to be cast, most likely, for ticket sales, but I think the leads (namely Tracy) should be Hollywood-unknowns. That way you are all but guaranteed to having an actress putting her heart into the role. I cannot speculate on who should be cast, however.

My Prediction:

They will get a bunch of big names of Hollywood in the movie and then make them have voice overs when they sing

My dream cast:

Edna - Harvey(who else?)
Tracy - Marissa
Penny - Anne Hathaway(saw Ella Enchanted, she can sing)or me!
Motomouth - Queen Latifah(They can train her voice to sing like that)
Link - Justin Timberlake
Amber - Mandy Moore
Seaweed - Usher(I love him!!)
Velma - Megan Mullaly(GO KAREN!)
The Dad(sry forgot his name) - Danny Devito(sry it's just funny picturing him dancing with Harvey dressed as Edna)LOL

The only person I can see replacing Harvey as Edna would be John Goodman, if he can soften himself (he may be a little too "butch"). Yes Harv has that voice but his Edna definitly had certain soft feminine qualities.

Personally I think Jerry Stiller would be great as Wilbur still. He may be a little too old but I think he could still pull it off. Nathan Lane would also be hilarious and I think Robin Williams could add an interesting twist as well.

Speaking of Stillers. Ben Stiller would be hilarious as Corny as would Vince Vaughn, although I doubt he would take the role or even be considered for it.

Velma: One word. Bette. Come on just think about her take on "Miss Baltimore Crabs" Nothing could be more perfect.

I think for purposes of the movie The female authority figure is gonna need to be split up. But yes Anna Gastyer would be perfect in any of the roles.

For the love of god don't give Amber to Brittney. That would be the second time that Laura lost a big break to the talent less Brittney. Jessica Simpson would work but Laura could be brought in for less cash and a chance to prove herself outside of Broadway.

As far as Link and Seaweed. I'm sure they will go to the flavor of the minute. and maybe to get this movie made it will have to be that way.

Don't mess with Mary as Motormouth. Although if you had to Queen Latifa would be fine as would Jennifer Holiday.

Now as far as Tracey goes. I say give it to Marrissa. She deserves it and made enough of a name for herself when the show itself opened. She will translate to film well and if shes 31 she looks da*n young still. Or give it to Carly. Make a new star, why not.

I know I am forgetting penny and inez. But frankly I'm spent.

I don't know why you guys keep on pushing Queen Latifah. Even if you can train her voice, I will not buy her as the mother of a teenage son. She is too young and can't sing what is required of the character. As for Frenchie Davis, she has a great voice but she is even younger. Hopefully they will have more sense and cast someone like Patti LaBelle, who is now sixty, can sing the s**t out of "I know where I've been" and is the right age for this character.

I agree w/ Bette Midler playing Velma. Except I don't really like that song.

Can anyone see Mindy Sterling (If you don't know who she is, she is the lady in the Austin Powers movies) as the Female Authority Figure. What do you think?

Marissa as Tracy, definitely (seen her & loved her, and just saw Carly Jibson, didn't like her too much)
Harvey as Edna (absolutely NO Robin Williams!! He would blow it)
Christine Baranski as Velma
Dustin Hoffman as Wilbus (don't know if he could sing it though)
Patti Labelle or Roz Ryan as Motormouth
