I was wondering what the community around Hamilton thought about each other/ thought about the whole community of Hamilton fans. Would you say it's cult-like? Would you say it's like a religious community?
THANKS

Probably similr to dedicated fans of any movie or show. They dont seem to be slightly crazy like some fans of celebrities, just passionate.

No. That would implyl a leader. And so purpose.

I loved Hamilton, but would bristle at calling myself a "Hamilfan" or "Hamilton Trash" as some of them call themselves. They seem like a normal fan community with their share of obsessive behaviors and weird quirks (such as writing real person fanfiction about Lin Manuel Miranda).

I had no idea people were writing RPF about LMM. I was curious and looked up Hamilton fic (lots of Hamilton/Laurens) but it never dawned on me to check for that.

Ask the Rentheads.

I don't think it's going to be a life long obsession for most like Star Wars and Star Trek.

Yeah, I didn't know people were writing fanfiction about LMM, I had only seen the Hamilton/Laurens ones. To be honest, that is a little strange and creepy but for the most part they seem normal. Nothing like fans you see for teen idols like Justin Bieber, One Direction, or Beyonce who can be pretty crazy. Also its probably a temporary obsession like that one person said.

Hey, I coined the term "Hamilfan" on Tumblr. To let you know, just in case you're labeling yourself as a Hamilfan, it isn't supposed to be a good thing. Yikes.

What? Doesn't it just mean "fans of Hamilton?" I don't really use tumblr often so I wouldn't know.

I haven't read the Lin fanfiction (thankfully) but I've seen the descriptions and some of it even includes his wife. It's disgusting to me. Hamilton fanfiction is fine, but there's no need to turn a normal family, who don't live the celebrity lifestyle, into some fantasy.
I'm also not a fan of the conduct of some of the fans at the stage door/outside the theatre. Screaming etc. It's unnecessary and no wonder the cast rarely come out in comparison to last year.
Other than that, I haven't seen issues with Hamilton fans.

My biggest complaint about BroadwayCon was the prevalence and tenacity of the Hamilton fandom.
As a proud Headhed, I understand passion, but I don't think this is the type of fandom that necessarily lives forever. They'll move on.

No, Hamilfan is supposed to sum up all the bad parts of the fans. The fanfiction, the "shipping" of actors and characters*, the "headcanons" of characters*, tagging Lin in everything, acting really desperate and try hard. Calling Lin their "cinnamon roll son" - it isn't like RENTheads or HedHeads. It's a negative term I created so there was a word for those typs of people, and it took off I guess.
*I have no problem with "shipping" or "headcanons" for characters, but every character in the show is a real person. It's really ****ing creepy to say that you "ship" Angelica and Hamilton - they were real people. It's like saying you "ship" Laura Osnes and Jeremy Jordan. It's not cool.

I love Hamilton so much but I'd never call myself "Hamiltrash" or anything like that...I find that to be taking it too far.

Wait, so a Hamilfan is a bad fan, but a Hamilton Trash is a good fan?

No, the people who call themselves Hamilton trash are Hamilfans.

Ok I'm pretty sure this is just your perception. I've seen Hamilton fans call themselves Hamilfans. I've never seen it used in a negative connotation. I think it's just the same as "Rentheads" or whatever. like I even googled it and it just seems to refer to fans of Hamilton. Like how Lin called the cast recording Hamiltune, or the Hamilton book, Hamiltome. There's a twitter account called hamilfans that just tweets news about Hamilton.

Cinders - all you did was combine the words "Hamilton" and "Fan" together to make one word. I assure you that you were not solely responsible for coming up with this very basic, unoriginal term

So Renthead is unoffensive but Hamilfan is offensive? I don't get why.
Also, i think people can "ship" the characters of the musical. These are fictional representations of the real people. I kind of DO ship Hamgelica. I don't think that's anything similar to shipping real-life individuals.

Most of these people are teens. To be honest I don't really "get" shipping but it's a popular "fandom "thing to do" I don't see how it's creepy or anything. The characters barely resemble the real people and are pretty much original creations of Lin. I mean Lin intentionally exaggerated the relationship between Hamilton and Angelica for a reason. There's nothing wrong with fans matching different characters together for fun if they want.
