Kind of like "Sideshow" re trying to sell a musical about another subject like Siamese twins.

A show doesn't have to be "big and splashy" (that helps) to be a hit with tourists and have good word of mouth.
It has to be good.
Look at ONCE.

Agreed- but when I recommend a show, I try to take into consideration what the audience is looking for. If it's for a friend who is only watching one show for the year, and is going for the whole broadway experience, I'd prefer they be dazzled and entertained vs. just entertained.

As for Once, though it didn't have that big and splashy production, there was something magical about the chemistry of the original leads (haven't seen the new cast yet). Would I recommend it to the adult once-a-year theatergoer? Since I feel the chemistry of the original cast made it magical and haven't seen the new cast, I might recommend one of the sure bet glittery ones before this. However, if the original cast were still in place, this would definitely trump some of the glittery shows.

IMHO Hardbody is a good show. Was it enjoyable? Yes. Was it magical? No. Is it on the list? Yes-if you can see several shows. No-if you can only see one or 2 shows.

tobiagg - where was your rush ticket? Do they just try and fill the venue or is there a specific seating area?

I didn't have a rush ticket but when I was seated in the orchestra front side, the seats had leg room but there was no arm room whatsoever. A tall guy sat right in front of me and blocked my view so at intermission I asked to sit in the mezz (side aisle row F). The seats up there were spacious and the view was terrific. Mezz is definitely the way to go for this theater.

Who knows why it's not selling. It's certainly an extremely tough sell.

Right.

I picked up a rush ticket for a friend at 6:50PM for a 7:30PM curtain. Getting rush for this show is not an issue.
