If they can make it work that would be awesome! They'll have to cut out a lot though. They should start out with Harry as an eleven-year-old, and have him find out he's a wizard and then skip a couple of years. It's probably not necessary to put in stuff about the Sorcerer's Stone or the Chamber of Secrets. The majority of the Triwizard Tournament could be left out, but obviously they have to put that bit in about Voldy returning.
What does everyone think?
oh say it aint so.
First shrek, now this?
Ummm, Shrek is going to West End/Broadway? Anyway, Potter's brilliance far surpasses that of Shrek.
Live Quidditch??? How in the world are they gonna manage that on stage? If this ends up coming to fruition, I really hope it doesn't go the way of LOTR. I still think that this is a bad idea
I think is is a disaster in the making. The books are great- leave them alone!
"Potter's brilliance far surpasses that of Shrek. "
which is why it should be left alone and NOT made into a musical. I mean if that turns out to be a flop and I find it hard not to then can you imagine how much of a let down it would be. There are SOOO many potter fans that they have to please. It just seems like this would be a bit of an overkill... Plus does JK rowling really need more money yet?
God of theatre strike whoever produces that musical!
Isn't the mirror a tabloid? If not, I am more excited about the comic relief book that might be published in 2009. Even though I love Harry Potter, I just don't see this working. I would also think they would have to have approval from JK Rowling... I'm sorry- I've thought about this and anything I come up with doesn't work. I can't see a Hermione, Harry, and Ron standing on the stage and singing. Now if they did a parody, like a Forbidden Broadway HP, it might actually work!
I knew, I knew, I KNEW this was going to happen. Seven books onto one evening's performance! It's just...no, I can't see it working!

i think this would work if it was in the same concept as wicked

Voldemort's life story about how he became known as a Dark Wizard and how he wasn't REALLY evil, just a victim of bad timing?
"Death Eaters! You're gonna be Death EaaaaTERS! I'll teach you bout proper poise as you're killin' boys..."
Hmmm. I should definitely not write the music.

Everyone knew this day would eventually come. If they put everything in just to put stuff in, it'll be confusing to watch and way too long. If they leave stuff out, people will be disappointed. It's a lose-lose situation that everyone wants to see. I wonder how much say JKR has in this. Anyone know? All I'm saying is Professor McGonagall & Bellatrix Lestrange better have a freakin' awesome power ballad...that's all it needs :)
Andrew Lloyd Webber for the win!!

Please don't get me started...
I have been waiting for this day. It seemed so obvious that HP would eventually become a musical.
If they do it, I think the best route would be a 3 or 4 part musical. Like "Utopia" or "Nickleby". People would go. And I am sure they would sell out marathon days.
I'd rather see the Reduced Shakespeare Company version of 'The Compleate Works of J.K. Rowling'. Seven years of Hogwarts in seventy minutes of hilarity.

they should not do a 5 to 6hr musical they should just do one
of the books first. I always thought the goblet of fire being broadway material and if that becomes popular bring another book to the stage i also think they would need to bring stephen swartz to the project and just guessing the producers would probly open the show in the west end

I adore Musical Theatre, but not everything needs to be made into a musical just because it is "popular". The great majority of the best musicals were not based on well-known reading material and we all have so many pre-conceived notions about HP that the "Recipe for Disaster" comment is exactly right. PLEASE let them simply finish with the last films and let HP rest as a wonderful series of books...... (thinking of this makes me sooo glad that I did't succumb to the temptation to run over the border to suffer through LOTR!)

that would actually be quite amusing and i think that's seriously a very good idea.
