Harry Potter: Every Seat Sold?

According to the grosses, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child has sold every seat for every performance so far. I'm not outright doubting it, but how likely/unlikely is this? Why haven't other shows been able to do this for as long as HP has?

Hamilton? Dear Evan Hansen? Wicked? Book of Mormon? They all have done it - and for longer, too.

Why would you doubt their reporting?

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

I explicitly said I'm not doubting it, but I am confused by it. Your reply made me curious, and according to their respective grosses page, Hamilton, Wicked, Dear Evan Hansen, The Book of Mormon, all did not sell out all of their tickets in the beginning, like Harry Potter did. Where did you get your information?

Well, why would original musicals sell out from their first preview, unlike a $1B+ franchise like Harry Potter?!

That said, I don't think Hamilton belongs in that list. That had HUGE buzz coming from off-Broadway and seemingly played to pack houses from the first preview.

I wouldn't expect an original musical to sell out. In fact I think I was/have always assumed nothing would immediately sell out from preview #1, which is why I was intrigued by the HP grosses. Again, not doubting BWW reporting; just curious about whether this has happened before, or if HP is the first to do it.

Im not sure the point of this thread. Come from Away has been sold out for two-and-half years now, Hamilton for what, 4 years now? Every hit show sells every seat for months-to-years. This isn't new or rare.

That said, that doesn't mean every seat is sold months, weeks, or even days in advance. Most hit shows will eventually slow down, but will still sell out by the start of any particular performance (the aforementioned Come from Away).

Even if it hasn’t happened before.... is it really all that shocking that of all shows the first one would be Harry Potter? It’s quite possibly the most popular franchise on the planet.
