I adored Harvey in Hairspray. He was a wonderful Edna with plenty of warmth and sweetness, he even pulled off singing the songs in the show that were required. But Tevye? I can imagine him acting the hell out of the role, but singing "If I Were A Rich Man" and the sweet melody that the song possesses?
I would most likely want to go to see him as Tevye but with reservations

oy. I think I just threw up a little bit in my mouth. :P
I really hope this is not the case. What the heck are they thinking?? This is a classic role, and although Harvey is special in his own way---he cannot play this part.
Mario Cantone would be a better pick (and that would be horrid as well...)
And he would be worse than Molina because...

he can't sing.
When is Molina leaving?

I thought I heard January.
Where does it say he is playing Tevye?
Ok, Molina is not wonderful by any stretch of the imagination--but at least his voice doesn't grate on every last nerve in your body. He can carry a tune... Updated On: 11/5/04 at 03:33 PM

Once again that journalistic haven that is Broadway.com releases a story without credible sources and, in fact, goes out of its way to point out that the actual sources who would have the information are out of the country and, thus, haven't made this decision in the first place.
Why people keep hitting that gossip rag of a site is beyond me.

He leaves in January. I just reread the thing on Broadway.com and realized that it's one of their reports that says they learned it, but it hasn't been confirmed nor has Leveaux seen anyone who has auditioned. I laughed though when I brought the story up on my computer. There was the story about Harvey and a picture of Jordan (last name?) from Avenue Q with his Scream mask!

But JohnPopa. The site is all new and shiny. You must go look!

Thanks Johnpopa. I wasn't gonna be the one to say it.
Personally, I think Harvey would make a wonderful Tevye...he's charming, sincere, a great actor, and his singing, though definitely "character" is quite sweet if you ask me.

Very true, Redhot. His performance in Hairspray was absolutely wonderful. But, Tevye is a Broadway royalty role. Granted, Molina didn't quite qualify in my book, but I thought he did a fine job. That role needs someone like, oh, I don't know, Zero friggin Mostel. It needs someone who is a force of nature unto themself. And, don't flame me, but the role is also very masculine and paternal. Harvey pulls off paternal fantastically. Masculine? Um...you see my point. My opinion anyway.
I suppose after Harvey they'll get Lea Delaria to do it.
Oy, indeed.
Since Nathan Lane is following in Zero Mostel's footsteps so much, wouldn't he be a better option? Maybe not old enough looking or something, but there's makeup and a fake beard for that. I'm not knocking Harvey until I see it. Who knows? Weren't people skeptical about Bernadette as Mama Rose at first, too?
I was never skeptical about Bernadette being Mama Rose...

Bernadette has a unique voice, but Fierstein makes her sound like the most prototypical singer in existence. Calling his voice "unique" is like calling the sun "shiny."
Thank you Plum.
Can anyone imagine him trying to blurt out Sunrise, Sunset
"Is this the little girl I carried...?"
While on this subject when is Dame Edna gonna play Edna Turnblad???
And Nathan as Tevye??? Timone singing those songs??? You've gotta be out of your mind!
And Harvey did sing the part of Golda when he sang "Do You Love Me?" for that Broadway on Bravo thing...
Nathan is a tad busy to be doing Fiddler. He will be in London until 1/8 doing the Producers there and starts filming the movie of the Producers in February.
Rumor has it that they are in discussions with Mandy Patinkin to play Tevye. I think he'd be a perfect choice but I know this will start a firestorm from the Mandy haters on the Broadway boards.
Ah well, you can't please everyone.

That might bring in a new audience for the show. More people are always good.
