I would buy tickets to see Harvey in Fidler, and this comes from someone who basically never wants to see the show again.

I have trouble picturing Patinkin as being very authoritative, and I really can't picture how the songs would sound with him "pretty"-ing them up. Maybe it's time Ernie Sabella got a serious role.

I thought John Stamos was set to replace Molina.

I REMEMBER THAT! I believe William Hung beat him out in the end.

I'm still trying to picture Harvey as the father a bunch of daughters.

I don't think he would be very good, but I would LOVE to see it!

I could see him to a point. But I wouldn't rush out to see him.

OMG.... it looks the part but is a little too feminine to be Tevye...

Mandy's voice isn't in terribly good shape these days, apparently... his last album was all Sondheim and one of the comments I heard was that in his lower range he sounded like 'an old man with Parkinsons'.

He sang on Dead Like Me recently and it wasn't very good... he sang 'Always' by Irving Berlin.

Just the thought of Harvey in "Fiddler" put a big smile on my face for the first time today! re: Harvey as Tevye? Say it ain't so, Leveaux

Broadway Matt read my mind as I thought of Ernie Sabella as well.

that's funny u thought of sabella too! there must be other actors who could fit the role. I think the hard part is getting someone who will give a distinct performance and really put their mark on it, but without them going too far into "character zone" where it becomes too big and loses the realism that the emotional story needs.

how about Gandolfini?

It is true:

Harvey is taking over as Tevye.

The show is being renamed Fiddler on the Rainbow!

Hope this helps!

P.S. Is Nancy Opel still in the show?

If cast, Harvey would be incredible. He's one of the only people that they could cast to put a new twist on Tevye that I would pay money to see. Maybe after him, they can hire Meat Loaf if he's available after Chitty...

I'm diggin my James Gandolfini idea the more I think about it. Or Philip Seymour Hoffman. or John Leguizamo.

Ted Casablanca also mentions this on his gossip site on eonline, so Broadway.com isn't the only place.

Honestly, I have a very hard time seeing it work.

It wouldn't work. He's an awful choice and he would ruin it by trying make up for his lack of talent by just making noises and make people laugh - he would ruin the heart of the show. Mandy is interesting, but I think Alfred is wonderful. It's the only Tevye I've ever seen that didn't copy Mostel and Topel - and it gets old after a while. Molina made it modern and funny and in the end, more touching. I think he's great - he got my vote for best actor over hugh.
