Midwestern is currently the American standard accent that gets used in media most frequently.

What you are actually referring to is called a Standard American Accent. There is no such thing as a "Midwestern accent," just as there is no such thing as a Southern, Northern, or Western accent. An Ohio accent is different from an Illinois accent, which is different from a North Dakota accent. When referring to American accents that are not distinctly regional, it is best to use the term "Standard American Accent": https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_American

No one wants or needs thinking about geography.  A standard (which IS the correct term) accent is used to erase that.  When I was an acting major 120 years ago, we had to learn it, and were expected to use it on stage unless told otherwise.

I'm guessing that isn't the case anymore.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

it does seem strange that the Australian production used and American accent.

I was taught an American standard accent in school not too long ago, so I think it's still around. It doesn't seem to be terribly widely used in actual productions I've seen, though, which makes sense to me...to my ear at the time it sounded slightly off/false and was kind of difficult to master.

Kerry Ellis didn't use an "American accent" during her run in the show on Broadway. She attempted one early on, but it slipped in and out, so eventually she stopped and just used her standard speaking voice.

Ah, interesting! Thanks for the info. I guess it was early on when I heard she was using one.

I saw Idina Menzel in london in sept 2005 and she spoke and sang in american english. the rest of the cast spoke with british accents.

Rachel Tucker is a fantastic elphaba and any of you that can see her on broadway should not miss it.

Wicked has maintained a very high standard for both b'way and US touring casts Ive seen

Wicked will play on bway for another decade or longer and will settle in with phantom and lion king as the longest running shows in broadway history

I thought it was obvious/goes without saying that Idina didn't do a British accent while in the West End production. She opened the production, and the standard was established after she left.

Btw as previously stated Rachel Tucker will be or for a couple days in January. If you end up going those days, the standby Christine Dwyer is AMAZING. She was Elphaba in both the tour and Broadway and she recently came back to fill in for Emily (the old standby) temporarily. Her and the understudy are very good so you are in good hands no matter what!

I caught Wicked a few weeks ago, and Rachel Tucker is well worth the ticket price to go back. One of the greatest, most triumphant Elphabas I've ever seen. That's saying a lot, because as much as I love the show, the audience has become really rather dreadful and the show seems to lose its overall touch/impact as the years go on. But Tucker is a powerhouse and her acting chops alone are not to be missed.

Kerry used an American accent her whole run.

A couple of days??? She's gone from Jan 5th to the 14th. Also she's been sick and has missed most of her shows this week. Hannah Shankman hasn't been on yet so you can't really say how she is(although I think she will kill it when she does go on).

I listed the dates of Tucker's absence at the beginning of the thread, mailhandler. Calm down. Why the negative tone against Tucker?

"the show seems to lose its overall touch/impact as the years go on. "

I actually disagree with that. I'm no huge Wicked fan but I've seen two completely different casts in the last few years and felt the show was really solid and held up both times. Judging by your icon, perhaps you've seen the show too much? That could make you feel like it's losing its impact...

Why are you telling me to calm down? 9 days is more than a few days. Also Rachel has been sick since Sat. How is that being negative?

Ugh. I should know better than to start a post about Wicked. The fans are just as insane as I remember. But thank you to the the helpful people on this post. I actually will be seeing An American in Paris instead. Someone stated it on this thread and I agree that there's no rush to see Wicked since it will be around for awhile. Thanks anyway!
