The movie "Buona Sera Mrs. Campbell" has served as the basis for Carmelina AND the uncredited basis for Mamma Mia.
Some of the same Damon Runyon stories served as the basis for Guys and Dolls and the uncredited basis for Brecht/Weill's Happy End.

Interesting thread. I think the only ones that really meet newintown's criteria are the Cyranos (1973, 1993), two Comedy of Errors adaptations (Boys from Syracuse, Oh, Brother!) and the musical adaptations of Three Men On A Horse (I love the score to Let It Ride!, btw).
I also thought of Lysistrata by Aristophanes. In 1961 there was a musical adaptation starring Cyril Ritchard titled The Happiest Girl in the World. The music was lifted from Offenbach themes. It ran a merry 96 performances. In 1972 there was a musical play of Lysistrata starring Melina Mercouri (she of Illya, Darling) and featuring original songs by Peter Link (King of Hearts, Earl of Ruston). It managed to last 8 performances.
Coincidentally, I'm listening to Earl of Ruston right now. Why hasn't Capitol or DRG reissued this on cd? I like the songs and their 70s arrangements. For that matter when is Clownaround going to claw out of the past and get issued even if it is digitally a la The Capeman? Me thinks a new thread is forming.
Thinking about this I was surprised there hasn't been another musical adaptation in some form of Twelfth Night. There is the lush Richard Adler composed Music Is, but I believe that is it. Correct me if I am wrong?

Posted: 5/18/10 at 10:09pmThere was another musical version of Spider Man that played in London. The cast recording is very... odd. I can't really think of anything else that hasn't been mentioned.

The obvious inspiration for both CARMELINA and MAMMA MIA!:

twinbelters-
It's had *another* adaptation. (Lysistrata that is), the new musical Give it Up, which had it's world premiere in Dallas. It's really hysterical.

I have five different cast recordings of five different adaptations of PETER PAN.
Can anyone top more than five of any particular story?

The story of Martin Guerre. Which was obviously the basis for the Claude-Michel Schönberg musical "Martin Guerre" but it was also the basis for The House of Martin Guerre by Canadian Leslie Arden. HMG came first and many feel is superiour but the commercial and financial power of the Les Mis folks managed to squash HMG's potential and after an acclaimed runs in Chicago and Toronto it has been sitting on a shelf waiting for people to forget about the mess that was Martin Guerre.
The historical event that was famously adapted as a story by Dumas also inspired a few films including the french "Le Retour de Martin Guerre" starring Gérard Depardieu and "Sommersby", a 1993 Hollywood film starring Jodie Foster and Richard Gere, which moves the story to the United States after the American Civil War.
I'm hoping that enough time has passed that some smart producer will get behind "The House of Martain Guerre" and give it another shot. It really is a fantastic show.

Also, Cinderella. Ovrtur lists no fewer than 12 (and I think more...but we're still debugging, so the contact bar is blocking things)

I am pretty sure no one has mentioned this yet, but Godspell and Superstar are both the Gospel of Matthew...
And staying Biblical we have Two by Two, The Apple Tree and Children of Eden...though Eden never was on Broadway.
And it is going out of the intended focus, but there is an American Opera of Little Women...
