and yet...
when is it a dream and not a fantasy?

My niece wants to act. She SAYS. Her only performances have been in school requirements , spear holders type stuff. She rarely auditions ( can't b rejected if u don't go) doesn't attend plays in our city, and has only at the age of 19 gotten her 1ST real job in a store. I don't see her having the stamina of the drive or even the talent for performance. I have tried to encourage her for backstage stuff think she might be good @ that. Afyer she finished her university degree in Drama she's told her parents that she wants to go for 2 yrs theatre skills training! How r her parents supposed to pay 4 this AND her younger sis's schooling? I love my niece but like I said dream or fantasy?

And hopefully she'll figure all of that out. College can be a rude awakening for some people. They think they want something, but then find out it isn't what they thought it was. That's why some people end up changing their major or just dropping out.

Let her do it. If money is an issue, make her pay for it. That will test how much she really wants it.

Every performer has the teacher who thinks it is their job to tell them "You'll never amount to anything." It creates a fire under your ass to work even harder. Everyone who wants to be in this industry should be in this industry. If they really have no talent, they are going to realize that themselves after ten years of not working. Maybe at that point they will find a day job that really inspires them. Or start a family.

Anyone who gives up after one person tells them they can't do it, isn't cut out for this business in the first place.

I agree w most of what u have said. Unfortunately, she is a middle class kid who has never gone without, either in needs or most wants. Not spoiled or mean just believes everything will go her way. I gave her a copy of August-Osage County and suggested she use some of the pieces for auditions. She couldn't be bothered to read it,just believes that everything will "magically" happen like in those stupid reality series. You too can be a STAR! it just happens. Unfortunately, i think there is a whole generation out there like this- just look @ the scary auditions for Idol.

So that will be her undoing. That's for her and her parents to figure out.

But if it makes you feel any better, I know gads of kids that are working their butts off.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

Yes it does. It renews my faith that there r young ones out there who r willing to work towards fulfilling a dream not just expect the world to conform 2 their version of reality.
