Sean Hayes and Anne Hathaway will star in a Rob Ashford-directed workshop of the Burt Bacarach/Hal David/Neil Simon musical PROMISES, PROMISES.
If anything comes of it, it may get a revival.

now *thats* exciting!!!
That is great news, I hope it makes it the broadway
Ashford does seem like the best choice to choreograph this show. I would love to see what he does with Turkey Lurkey Time. I disagree with Riedel, I think that Hathaway's voice would be great for this. And I think that Hayes could be wonderful-it would be great (yet very weird) to be seeing him play a role so different from Jack.
If you are comparing Sean Hayes to Jerry Orbach, as Riedel did, I could see how they are dissimilar. But I think that Hayes could be a Chuck Baxter in the Jack Lemmon mode of the source material, the film The Apartment. When I read Hayes' name this morning, I thought it was a good choice, and don't necessarily agree with Riedel's take that it is strange casting. It should be someone a little offbeat, a bit of an everyman, not a heroically handsome type. Anyway, thrilled that we could be seeing Promises again. Any chance to hear that score makes me happy.

Who is Sean Hayes? Martin Short should do any revival of this show!
Martin Short? As a YOUNG, up-and-coming business man, with a bachelor pad?
That's fantastic news!
That made my morning!

Sean Hayes? Isn't he a bit swish to play the role?

Well the character is single, lives alone, caters to the men at the office and keeps his fridge stocked, so .... :)
Well, I love both of them, so it sounds fine. I remeber when Anne sang in ELLA ENCHANTED. She was good, but not amazing.
I hope this makes it to Broadway!

The score is great, but what will they do with the sexist, dated book? All the executives are men and all the secretaries and underlings are women for starters.
Yes, it is as bittersweetly funny as they come, particularly Act Two, and well constructed (Simon's best libretto work) but times have evolved since 1968.
Hayes is cuter, butcher and more charming than Reidel and Hathaway sings better than he does, so why doesn't Reidel the Talentless keep his claptrap shut?

A few years ago they did "How to Succeed..." on Broadway which has the same problem. They'll find a way around it.
Hathaway seems too uptight for Fran.
another revival i SO want happening! Promises Promises is such an endearing AMAZING show!

You "deal" with the book by playing it as a period piece - the same way "Boeing, Boeing", a 1960's comedy about sexy stewardesses, is being played.
This sounds very interesting, and I would love to see Anne on Broadway.
I would love for this to happen. I first heard if the show through CAMP and then bought the OBC cd...and loved the music. It's very 60's campy fun and I think they would be great. I think Jerry would be a good choice for choreographer too...but Ashford is just as good.
Why shouldn't Hayes play a straight role? This is Broadway, folks...not Hollywood. The question is, can he handle the rather demanding score?
I'm happy about this, I've always loved me some PROMISES, PROMISES.
i safely think Sean Hayes could handle the songs in Promises Promises. it's more lively and speak-sing at points. it can be done well and he's the comic genius to work it.
it's the serious points at the end, with Fran, that will leave me troubled about a revival. anyone know who else is going to be in the workshop?

Because he's not that good of an actor.
This sounds great. Means I need to get the CD soon.

right, but he CAN play slap-stick very well. i think it could work.

I hate Sean Hayes. I can't imagine him in this show at all.
