I got that too, Ebonic.
Amber sings pretty high--there's that one note in Mama I'm A Big Girl Now--"watch me FLYYY" which is semi-high belting. Becky had to scream it, it seemed.

Here's a quote from Hilary Duff's blog (the closest thing I could find to official news):
"May 14, 2006

My European tour has been great! Italy was crazy!! The fans are so passionate and energetic. They embraced me at every turn. I’m really looking forward to getting home to sunny California. This Sunday is Mother's Day and my mom's birthday is also this weekend, so Haylie and I are going to take her away for a few days, just the girls! She deserves it because she works so hard. How's this for exciting news...my sister got a part in the Broadway production of Hairspray! Be sure to check her out in the show if you are in NY this summer. Well, we are about to take off. TTYL!"

If Hilary weren't famous, and we were just basing Haylie on her credits, I don't think any of us would know who she is. I only know her from Napoleon Dynamite.
And the gripe about stunt casting, it's going to happen whether you like it or not. Without stunt casting, many shows would close causing people to be out of a job. And even if stunt casting weren't an issue, there would still be many talented people searching for a job.

How does this even qualify as stunt casting? Who knows who she even is?

Posted: 5/21/06 at 7:00amTo be honest, just cuz she's related to HIlary, doesnt mean she's bad. I like Hilary and I do think Haylie do look the role of Amber. No one's seen her done a show/singing/acting, so let's say whether she's gd after we see her.

Posted: 5/21/06 at 11:24amI applaud Haylie Duff for taking a step away from Hilary's shadow and I have heard some of her music from various places on the web and she's not that bad, she is pretty good and her role as Summer in Napoleon Dynamite (as stupid as that movie was) she did it very well and she can act- she was in Seventh Heaven and was pretty good, so I say hey- Good Job Haylie Duff, let's see what you can do.

According to internet movie database she was born Feb. 19, 1985. A year older than me ... So she would be 21. Unless my math is wrong...
I'm not sure how old Hilary is.

But yes, Haylie is older than her sister.

Haylie Takes on Broadway!
Hairspray will soon be welcoming two new actresses to go and shake their fanny muscles. Haylie Duff, best known for her television and film work, is set to begin performances as the snotty Amber Von Tussle in July. The Tony Award-winning musical has also confirmed that Isabel Keating will be the next Velma Von Tussle.
Though younger sister Hilary is the most famous member of the family, Haylie Duff has been acting professionally since the age of twelve, getting her start with a very brief appearance in the 1997 miniseries True Women. Her small screen credits include recurring roles on Boston Public, her sister's series Lizzie McGuire, Joan of Arcadia and 7th Heaven. She has appeared in the films I Love Your Work and Napoleon Dynamite (in which she played the stuck-up Summer Wheatley, a character much like Amber Von Tussle) among others. She stars with her sister in the summer movie Material Girls. Both Duff sisters are singer/songwriters. Haylie co-wrote two songs for Hilary's debut album and has dueted with Hilary on recordings and in concert. The pair also notably appeared on an Icebreakers commercial together.
Keating received a Theatre World Award, Drama Desk Award and Tony nomination for her
performance as Judy Garland in The Boy From Oz. She had first played Garland at Gotham's ArcLight Theatre in the show Judy's Scary Little Christmas. She won the 2000 Helen Hayes Award for Best Actress for her performance in Tom Stoppard's Indian Ink at The Studio Theatre in Washington, DC. She also created the role of Lotty Wilton in the world premiere of Matthew Barber's Enchanted April at The Hartford Stage Company and briefly appeared as Rose Arnott in the Broadway production of the play. Her off-Broadway credits include appearances at The Atlantic Theatre Company, Ensemble Studio Theatre and Rattlestick Theatre Company. Her other theatrical credits include Dinner With Friends, The Rise and Fall of Little Voice, Frequency Hopping (in which she portrayed Hedy Lamarr) and, earlier this year, The Diary of Anne Frank at Paper Mill Playhouse.

I know I shouldn't judge her before I even see her, but come on...
You just did.

I have not read the whole thread but you guys have GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!
You are judging her because of her FAMILY? How fair is that?? We don't know what she is capable of. We all know her sister sucks but so what??? I have faith in her and I am going to remain that way and I expect all the people saying "no no no..." etc. etc. to be pleasantly surprised. If I'm wrong then.. oh well but there is no reason to judge BEFORE she even starts and because of her sister.

yeh, that is weird.
I find many of you over here at least giving her a chance, which is good. T
hey are tearing her up on a myspace hairspray group. However I think that might be due to - pure adolescence.
I dont have the patience or time to defend her there.

This could either be surprisingly good or disaster. Amber is a role that doesn't require the greatest singer (and Haylie can't sing from what I've seen) and the acting might be right up her alley, so it's possible she could do alright with this. The thing is, I've seen her act on countless things and she's NOT a very good actress, IMO. I guess we'll have to wait and see.
A lot of people are comparing this to the Diana DeGarmo situation, but here's something to keep in mind as well that makes it a little bit different: Haylie's acted in quite a few things before so we have some sort of idea of her acting skill. We'd never seen Diana act (except the few that saw her in WSS) before Hairspray.
