I'm also in the middle of doing this, and for the same reason!
Do one musical comedy and one serious, and I think wearing different outfits is a good idea.
When's your hairspray audition.
"If we don't live happily ever after at least we survive until the end of the week!" -Kermit the frog "I need the money... it costs a lot to look this cheap!" -Dolly P. "Oh please, Over at 'Gypsy' Patti LuPone hasn't even alienated her first daughter yet!" Mary Testa in "Xanadu" "...Like a drunk Chita Rivera!" Robin de Jesus in "In the Heights"
"B*tch, I don't know your life." -Xanadu After that if he still doesn't understand why you were uncomfortable and are now infuriated, kick him again but this time with Jazz Hands!!! -KillerTofu#2re: Headshots
Posted: 4/1/07 at 5:24pmI'm not an actor, but I would get one musical comedy and one serious so they can see both sides of your look. And even if Hairspray is a musical comedy, you can have the "serious" photo for future shows.

Posted: 4/1/07 at 10:46pmI would go with color. I have seen a lot of photographers allow you to convert them at any point though becuase they give you a CD with your headshots...so just a couple clicks on a photoshop-type program and there you go!

Get color digital shots.
you can always use photoshop to make them black and white if you need them later.
Usually, instead of 'musical comedy' the terms used for headshots are 'commercial' and 'legit'. 'Commercial' being your smiley, musical comedy, possible TV commercial shot. The 'legit' shot being more serious that you could use for straight plays, films and dramas.
if you're in NYC, i can recommend a great photog to you if you want to email me.

Yep! That's what one of the guys I worked with last summer told me (he's now an artistic director).
The other thing is that it depends on the theatre. Some directors and theatre companies have a preference when it comes to headshot - so get a black and white one done, too, just in case.

Posted: 4/2/07 at 9:35amAs stated before, if you are shooting digital there is no need to take any shots in b/w. Shoot everything in color then convert to b/w if you happen to need or want one for a particular job. Shooting in b/w only limits what you can do with the prints and it is so easy to turn a shot into b/w at a moment's notice.
