Posted: 4/21/07 at 7:42amHello, I am planning on directing "Hedwig" but I am having trouble gathering ideas for the set. Most pictures I have found, the stage is set up just like a rock band/rock concert. How would I stage anything? Please give me your ideas or if you have any pictures send them to me. Thanks!

Posted: 4/21/07 at 11:42amConsidering it's mainly a one man show, with dialouge tossed in occasionally by Yitzak and Skzp, you don't NEED anything more than the band, and an exterior door. He doesn't play a scene with anyone, he does it all on his own. (Didn't you read the script?)

Why are people so snipey?
Agreed, this shows a certain lack of creativity... but they are just asking for sugestions.

Posted: 4/21/07 at 12:08pmSince Yitzak is from Croatia, you might want to stage the whole thing like an outdoor concert with tents, like a rock festival, and the tents can double as a refugee camp. Also, consider an explosion effect at the end, like, have Hedwig blow up at the end of Midnight Radio. Also, stage that in a giant boombox and it could symbolicize the radio of Hedwig's mind.

The original Off-Broadway production (at the Jane Street Theatre -- which was a former basement ballroom set-up as a small theatre), was performed like a concert. Hedwig made his entrance thru the audience, then remained on stage with The Angry Inch behind him. There was a side-door that opened and via lights, it was his link to the stadium where Johnny was having his concert. No other characters are ever seen -- Hedwig tells us (the audience) about them. There are no sets, either.
The film-adaption visualized what we 'heard' about in the stage-version.

Rent or buy the DVD movie and watch the making of. It shows a lot of footage from the Off Broadway production.
But like everyone else said, you really don't need much of a set at all. And I prefer the band to be onstage with Hedwig as opposed to above him on another level. It would seem to limit the amount of interaction between Hedwig and the band.
