Hedwig Love/Discussion Thread

Hey everybody!

Hedwig is one of my favorite shows ever and living it Iowa it can be very hard to find people to discuss the show with. I have never seen the show on stage and I am very, very excited about the possibility of a revival. I have a few questions/topics for discussion I've always wondered about.

Did Hedwig tell Tommy she used to be a he? What does she mean when she says he only loves the back of her?

Are Hedwig and Tommy the same person? If you believe this theory, care to elaborate?

There are lots of other things I would love to discuss, but hopefully this gets the ball rolling!

Thanks to anyone who responds.

re: Hedwig Love/Discussion Thread

Hey, there!!
I've also been a huge fan of Hedwig for some time now and have yet to see it on stage.

Those are two really great questions and both are open to opinion and viewer/reader's choice. I know people who are 100% sure that Tommy knew about Hedwig being a woman, and some who are convinced that he thought Hedwig was always a she.

When Hedwig tells him to "love the front of her," she means to accept her for everything. This is what gives me an idea that Tommy knew she was a woman. In the movie, Hedwig talks about how Tommy would only always kiss her neck, and hug her from behind. This could be because he didn't want to face the idea of something in her pants that he wasn't comfortable with.

Tommy and Hedwig seem like they are the same person, two personalities of the same person, but I do not believe they are.
I know that each character was modeled after and created for specific people JCM either met or had in his head.
Since the show was originally supposed to be completely about Tommy and Hedwig was only introduced to be his babysitter, I do not believe they are intended to be of the same.
Tommy is very much like Hedwig, and that's why Hedwig really thought she had found her other half in him.

I don't think they are the same but, as I mentioned, each character in the show obviously has a relation to each other. As if they are all each other's other halves.

[WOW, I apologize for my blabbering!]

EDIT: I should learn how to spell one of these days.

re: Hedwig Love/Discussion Thread

Totally, during the run of the show, opinions were divided between Hedwig and Tommy being the same person and not. Especially during the reprise of Wicked Little Town, when Hedwig emerges with Tommy's cross on his forehead. And, of course, we never see Tommy on stage.

The film, I think, makes it clear (to me, anyway) that they are indeed two separate people. And thank goodness they did, because we got to see the luscious Michael Pitt.
However, I'm sure there are many who still think they are one and the same.

I think the same dividing of opinion occurs with the question of whether Hedwig told Tommy right out that she was once a he. To me, that could be the reason Tommy avoided the front of Hedwig-fear of the unknown. Remember Tommy's shock when Hedwig forced his hand down there, and when Tommy asked "what's that?" Hedwig said it's what he had to work worth.

I love to discuss Hedwig too, so ask away! I'm sure you'll get a variety of opinions, and that's what's interesting about the story.

re: Hedwig Love/Discussion Thread

Tommy was never shocked, just in denial, just like the GI Joe who was the sugar daddy.

When Tommy finds Hedwig in the alley, was this planned? Were they meeting there? Did Hedwig know he was in the limo? Did Tommy know Hedwig was in the alley? Was this just a coincidence?

re: Hedwig Love/Discussion Thread

I played keyboards for this show and loved it...when you're a member of the "Angry Inch" you do a lot of sitting, watching the actor playing Hedwig, but I was never bored for an instant through a two-month run (with miniscule audiences--not because of the show quality!!) Yet the ending has always puzzled me, and the movie version, if anything, made it more confusing. What the hell actually happened? (Literally happened--no theories!)
I ask in all honesty/What would life be?/Without a song and a dance, what are we?/So I say "Thank you for the music/For giving it to me."

re: Hedwig Love/Discussion Thread

Roquat, what actually happened at the end is that Hedwig believes he has finally found his other half.

What did not actually happen, and is a matter of interpretation, is whether he found his other half in Tommy or if he found it within himself, symbolized by Tommy.

re: Hedwig Love/Discussion Thread

I hope you guys who never saw the play ARE aware that the stage version is performed as a rock concert. Its actually a one-man show with the onstage band playing The Angry Inch. Hedwig is simply talking to the audience -- there are no sets or costumes. We never see the things he's talking about -- he tells us about them. The film-version, of course, was opened-up and all the things Hedwig spoke about in the stage-version were fleshed-out.

Brody-don't forget about Yitzak on the stage!

"The film-version, of course, was opened-up and all the things Hedwig spoke about in the stage-version were fleshed-out. "

Yes, and I also believe that the film answers a lot of questions raised by the show.

re: Hedwig Love/Discussion Thread

I think it's hard to have a literal interpretation of the ending, because it's not literal and it's open to the interpretation of each person who sees it.

When I did the show, my thought was that Tommy was the only real one and Hedwig was a figment of his imagination. I'm pretty sure I was the only person involved with the production who thought that way, and it had no bearing on the show itself, but that's sort of where my mind went with it.

When Tommy finds Hedwig in the alley, was this planned? No

Were they meeting there? No. Hedwig was turning tricks and Tommy was looking for a whore.

Did Hedwig know he was in the limo? No.

Did Tommy know Hedwig was in the alley? No.

Was this just a coincidence? Yes.

The thing about Hedwig is that it kind of exists in its own reality. If you get too bogged down with the details (which all jibe within the confines of the world it creates), I think you miss the bigger picture.

Finally - and it's been some time since I saw the movie or read the script so I could be wrong here - I thought that it was clear Hedwig DID tell Tommy. I know she says that she told him her story, so maybe I just assumed that she mentioned all the details. Maybe this was just my interpretation, but I thought that she told him and that he was so wrapped in her that it didn't matter to him until he actually touched the inch. Once it was tangible he couldn't deal with it.

re: Hedwig Love/Discussion Thread

I forget how the stage version addresses it, but in the film, there's the scene in Tommy's bedroom, and when Hedwig tells him you hear the sound of a bomb falling and then an explosion.

re: Hedwig Love/Discussion Thread

You don't mean when Hedwig asks him to turn around and love the front of him, do you?

On the stage, Hedwig is just narrating, and he simply says, "I told him my story...." no particular sounds.

re: Hedwig Love/Discussion Thread

He's talking about the movie. There's the sounds of the bombs dropping and then Tommy asks if Hedwig has accepted Jesus Christ as her personal savior.

re: Hedwig Love/Discussion Thread

Yes, but he said he didn't know how the stage version handled it so I was trying to answer that for him.

re: Hedwig Love/Discussion Thread

I think- if I remember correctly- when Hedwig was at the Jane, there was a video promo floating around. In it- Trask and Mitchell were interviewed and (if I'm remember right) Trask and Mitchell disagree about Hedwig and Tommy being the same person.

I really don't think it maters too much if there is an official ruling on the Tommy and Hedwig are One/Two people. The beauty of a piece that feels whole without a forced conclusion is a wonderful thing.

Did Tommy know that Hedwig was a woman- I think certainly so:

Tommy: Where you from Hedwig?

Hedwig: I told him my story. His face was as still as a Yes album cover.

Tommy: Have you accepted Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior?

I would judge that Hedwig's line "His face was as still as a Yes Album cover is a demonstration of giant shock. What kinda giant shock? The kind the comes after telling a teenager that you had your penis cut off. (by a foot doctor according to the film)

my two cents.

re: Hedwig Love/Discussion Thread

It's two scenes in the film--it's the "bomb sound" moment in Tommy's bedroom and the "love the front of me" scene in Hedwig's trailer.

So, I guess the play just has the latter moment?

re: Hedwig Love/Discussion Thread

WEll, don't forget there are really no "scenes". It's Hedwig narrating his story to us. He even acts out the latter moment as if Tommy were there, moving around and all.

re: Hedwig Love/Discussion Thread

The play has two scenes- just as the movie does. A lot of the movie is ver betum to the stage version.

After hedwig draws the cross on Tommy's head with that whole business there is this little exchange:

"Tommy: You know when Eve was in Adam they were one, but when God pulled Eve from Adam they were seperated and Paradise was lost- but when she enters him again paradice will be regained! (

Hedwig: That's right Honey- how ever you want it! Just kiss my while we do it.

I turn turn Tommy arround and thrust his hand between my--

Tommy: WHAT THE F*CK IS THAT?!

Hedwig: That- what I have to work with...

Tommy: I think I hear my mom....

Hedwig: Sissy! Nancy! Lispy- Girly Boy... WHAT ARE YOU AFRAID OF?!

Tommy: Hedwig, I love you...

Hedwig: THEN LOVE THE FRONT OF ME! LOVE THE FRONT OF ME!!!

Tommy runs out the back door."

Its essentially just like the movie

re: Hedwig Love/Discussion Thread

I'm probably gonna get in trouble for this, but...

On The Site That Must Not Be Named there's a clip of Sugar Daddy from what seems like a professionally shot version of the stage show. It's up for sale. I know bootlegs are illegal, but this looks pro-shot. If anyone could PM on where I could find copies of the stage show, I would much appreciate it.

Thanks in advance.
