The drowning was cool at first, but then there's that huge, obvious hook holding him up, so it makes it less cool.
I thought the guy playing Sebastian was great though. He had such a nice natural tone to his voice.

Her old transformation in Denver was better I think. She's a lot more graceful, and thus doesn't look like she's having a seizure on her way to the surface. >_>
I saw Heidi's performance this evening and thought she was excellent. Both "I Want the Good Times Back" and "Poor Unfortunate Souls" were fantastic. She looks great in those costumes and embodies the character of Ursula. It was wonderful to see her in this role and I would encourage anyone and everyone to go see her in the show. What a fun night out...can't wait to go back!

I wish some pictures would emerge of her in the role. I wish I could make it up there to see her, but I won't be going to NY until the summer

Sorry I keep ranting, but I keep thinking of new things. The whole show just seems such a waste of money to me. Ursula's costume isn't even that great. I thought the tentacles would move on their own or something, but they never did. I just thought her whole costume would be more imaginative. And I thought her first entrance would be grander, like rising from the floor or something. When she turned around the costume looked so cheap and horrible. The padding in the butt just look so 2-D, it's awful.
I'm all for a run night out ( I loved Xanadu and [Title of Show]), but this is just awful.
WithoutATrace - i am so glad you went... we need to discuss soon
Here is a pic from us at the stage door last night
So glad that everyone is coming out to support her :)
I went to go see the show for the first time tonight mainly just to see Heidi. I went in with pretty low expectations but was surprised I came out liking it as much as I did which granted was not that much but I didn't hate it. Heidi was absolutely incredible. Extremely funny and fit much more into the character than SRS. The one thing that I would say that she needs to work on is handling those big tentacles. While she worked well with the smaller ones used during IWTGTB, she was fumbling with the big set used during PUS. During the end she had a bit of trouble finding one of the arm holes to flare it out. Also she didn't use them much during the song she would just brush them behind her. And I do agree with RentBoy that Ursula's costume is a disappointment. With all the "theatre magic" out there you would think they could make those tentacles come to life some how without the actress having to move them around like limp noodles. Then there's the "swimming" effects. Not so magical when you can see a clearly visible giant hook attached to the harness. And you could see the actors who play Ariel and Eric crawling to their positions behind the almost clear plastic waves. Scuttle was freaky. I think if I was a little kid he would scare me more than Ursula. Ursula's death was pathetic. And poor Heidi did all she could to try and spice it up but nothing could save that. Even the kids in the audience didn't really know what had happened. I heard a few asking their parents where Ursula went. Also where are her tentacles during that scene? Seriously. That was a major "WTF" moment for me. The mermaid costumes didn't bug me as much as I thought they were going to. In some scenes they worked and in others they didn't. The new Sebastian was great. Very funny and great voice. Flounder was adorable but that costume is ridiculous. The set was half nice and half horrendous. As in: I liked the water and sun effects etc but the set pieces such as the grotto, the bath tub, and the small row boat were just hideous eye sores. And since i just realized that I've been going on and on I will leave on the note that Heidi kicked all kinds of butt.

Awww, Pattilupuppy, what a lovely picture! (And you're cute, incidentally.)
When I saw it (early on), the first thing that came to mind with Eric's near-drowning (since he doesn't actually drown or there would be no more story) was Coram Boy. They did it earlier and better. And at least from the balcony you could still see the body double for Ariel as Sierra flopped over the plexiglass in the front of the stage. For a company (Disney) which obviously knows how to do transformations, the ones in TLM suck big time.
And WaT... Oh my. You like THIS and bug me about liking Shrek?!?!? :P Guess it'll be another agree to disagree.

I don't get why they couldn't just use a trap door and have the actor and actress climb out of it. That makes the most sense.
And man, those stupid "bong" like structures with the "birds" on them waving their arms around. How ridiculously stupid.
"And WaT... Oh my. You like THIS and bug me about liking Shrek?!?!? :P Guess it'll be another agree to disagree."
Haha. Yes. I've loved THE LITTLE MERMAID since the first preview on 11.3.07 and I've seen the show eight times now. I think the critics were way too harsh. The show is fantastic and everyone should go see it ASAP. (i was very disappointed to see that it wasn't full last night)
Hee. Ok. You take this one, I'll keep Shrek! :)
WAT - what are you smoking??????
oh my lord Jesus, in heaven... one of the worst musicals to grace the Broadway stage.
If the costumes and technical flubs aren't enough alone take a look at the terrible stage-adapted book or the horrendous fluff songs that made it into the new score ("She's in Love". let me puke please) !!
For Disney, I expect nothing but the best. This was the best of the WORST. Awful stuff.
I can't believe they have the nerve to sell full-price tickets to this garbage!! Were your eyes open when they did Ariel's "transformation" ??
Are you SURE you were at the same theatre as everyone else???
Schmerg - thanks for the compliment
everyone else - go see TLM NOW!
yesss, support monopolizing commercialism.
it's the best! especially if the quality of it is terrible.
First of all - Broadway theatre is all commercial (ie American Airlines Theatre) .. even non profit theatre companies have found ways to make it commercial, so this argument is tired
Granted artistically this show may not be the greatest in creation, but it is employing many people and people come see this show and love it. I have brought so many kids to this show who have never seen a show before and were absolutely blown away and so excited.
I understand that many of you dont like it, then dont go see it. But dont you dare attempt to make those of us that do like it feel like we are less of a person because of that. I find that attitude on here so offensive and childish, I hate it.
I can't wait to see the show on Saturday!
"WAT - what are you smoking??????"
I'm just high on life!
"oh my lord Jesus, in heaven... one of the worst musicals to grace the Broadway stage."
You can't be serious. What about Good Vibrations, Lennon, In My Life, Cry Baby, The Times They Are A Changin', Glory Days, The Pirate Queen, Hot Feet, The Wedding Singer, Lestat, Urban Cowboy, and Thou Shalt Not? Those are all far worse in my opinion.
"I can't believe they have the nerve to sell full-price tickets to this garbage!!"
Luckily, I've never paid full price...
"Are you SURE you were at the same theatre as everyone else???"
Absolutely...and I loved every second of it.

If I can down there before Heidi's run is over, I'm willing to give this a shot, but I did see "Shrek" and was incredibly disappointed. The four leads were terrific, but the show itself? Slight doesn't even begin to describe it. Except for "I Know It's Today" and the act one closer, I thought the songs were negligable.
I got my ticket via lottery, so at least the price was right. I couldn't imagine spending $120 on it.
or the horrendous fluff songs that made it into the new score ("She's in Love". let me puke please) !!
I actually liked almost all of the added songs more than the ones that were already there! "If Only Quartet," "Her Voice," "One Step Closer," "She's In Love," "I Want The Good Times Back," "Sweet Child," and King Triton's awesome reprise of "The World Above" are all great, and I love the extended version of "Fathoms Below." Even Scuttle's songs are a lot of fun, even if... Eddie Korbich's voice really, really, really grates on my nerves. (He's great for the character, though!)
I feel like the score is great-- and Danny Troob's orchestrations are FANTASTIC. The vocal talent is top-notch, and the energy level is wonderful. I'm willing to overlook the stupid sets and costumes, especially since it's a Disney show and isn't meant to be 'serious theatre.'
"Granted artistically this show may not be the greatest in creation, but it is employing many people and people come see this show and love it. I have brought so many kids to this show who have never seen a show before and were absolutely blown away and so excited."
Well, of course kids who have never seen a show before would be blown away and excited. But I know many "theatre-savvy" kids who have seen many shows (for their age) who all thought TLM was just dreadful. Its great that first-timers are enjoying themselves, as maybe they will become regular theatre-goers as they get older. But just because these first-timers are having a blast does not mean the show is any good.
I also don't understand the comment about it employs many people. What show doesn't? What does that have to do with whether the show is good or not?
As far as people loving it ... I know many people who have seen it, and not one of them would recommend it.
I'm going tomorrow night. Who wants to rush with me? Lol

Sorry Colors, I couldn't sit through it again. There's nothing that I think "Oh, id like to see that again."
And just to throw my two cents in, I think Broadway should represent the best that commercial theater has to offer. And sorry, but "The Little Mermaid" is not it. I understand it's all a matter of opinion, and I'm not saying fluff is bad, but this is just awful. There was no artistry involved in the production, no insight, nothing. It's Disney, and this is the best way they can represent people under water: with skates and tacky paint jobs? It's just an awful show, and the songs are horrible, and yes, the cast gives it their all, and yes, it's employing a lot of actors/musicians/technicians, but that doesn't make it any less awful. If I was taking someone to see the theater for the first time, I would never dream of taking them to this. It's up there with "Brooklyn" to me in awfulness, and I honestly don't see what you all see. How that awful pelican/seagull song made it past the entire creative team and Disney heads, and the weeks of previews and out-of-town tryouts, I just will never understand.
It's okay. Maybe someone will want to. I usually go alone, but I just don't feel like it tomorrow for some reason and everyone here uses the "I don't have the money" excuse. Haha.
I'm only going for Heidi (though I do love the music and the streamers at the end).
