Any particular reason why? I think Tick Tick Boom is great and that Lin did a fantastic job, but they’re very different pieces stylistically, tonally, etc.

^ I mean Lin has the theatre nerd brains and a sense of energy. And the material can help him expand his horizons as an artist. Just imagine him directing the farcical antics, the timeless music and a triple threat cast.

I don't think Gene Kelly had any directing experience when he made the film. Thst Streisand Woman didn't like him and vented to Arthur zlaurents that she "had a tap dancer for a director".

If Streisand did indeed vent this to Arthur Laurents then she is not only an extremely disrespectful woman but an ignorant one as well.
Kelly co-directed one of the greatest if not THE greatest musical film ever made: "Singin' in the Rain".
In addition to that film he also helmed/co-helmed the following feature films:
A Guide for the Married Man
Gigot
The Tunnel of Love
The Happy Road
Invitation to the Dance
It's Always Fair Weather
On the Town

Why would it be wrong for her to vent? Not that she did.
I would like to see a televised all black version. Maybe Jennifer Lewis can reprise her Dolly?

Well, it certainly was her prerogative to do so.
In my haste I mis-read Dollypop's original post. In re-reading it I now see that it was Dollypop not Streisand who was under the false impression that Kelly had not directed a film prior to "Hello, Dolly!"

And it wasn't a definitive statement. I said. "I don't think..."
One thing is certain: There was an acrimonious atmosphere on the set. Matthau despised That Streisand Woman and told her that she had "all the talent of a buttrrfly's fart", causing her to run off the set in tears. Kelly did notjing to assuage the situation.

I find it quite humorous that you refer to her as "That Streisand Woman".

Well, isn't that dandy?
It was Matthau who referred to her as “that Streisand woman”…

That fact makes it even more humorous and "dandy". ![]()
Some on this esteemed forum are still grinding that old axe 50 odd years later; give it up, as the wounded party has moved on to that glittery stage in the sky! I do not think we will ever see another extravagant musical production on the screen like the one Kelly did. Perhaps a completely different more intimate take could work. The trouble is that there is a dearth of bona fide female movie stars in that age range, which is a fault of Hollywood itself. Jennifer Aniston? Yes, she can sing.
I never had an issue with Barbra Streisand's age with regard to Dolly. I felt she looked older than her true age due to the period costumes and hairstyles, so I didn't see a problem with it. If a new film version was being done today, my choice would be Queen Latifah to star. I think she is a fine singer/actress and has a nice screen presence. She would do justice to the role.
