"Trevor Nunn, the director of the new revival of Night Music, said in an interview that he had aimed for a production that was a good deal more Chekhovian in its intentions than a lavish spectacle might have achieved. He added that he was soon hoping to mount a revival of Mr. Sondheims Follies, the 1971 musical about a reunion of showgirls and others who were part of a Ziegfeld Follies-like company, and that he would seek a similarly intimate feeling, though it would be performed in a larger space than the Menier Chocolate Factory in London, where the current Night Music originated."

"Careful watch you wish for"...
I think he'll do a fantastic job. Naysayers be damned...I loved A Little Night Music. I feel that his creative input helped make The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby the best show I've ever seen, and this from a man who adores musicals. I just might have to fly there for the first time to experience Follies once again.
THANKS for the good news!!

Well, I'm sure he is dead set on proving that the Roundabout version was far from as bad as it could get.

Eric Schaeffer (Kennedy Center) vs Trevor Nunn (West End) Follies.
Who will win the race to Broadway?

That's a great article. I don't think a chamber FOLLIES would work. I would imagine the forthcoming Kennedy Center production (if good) would transfer over Nunn's.
I really hope we do get one more new Sondheim musical.

Posted: 1/3/10 at 5:43pmWonderful, I've always wondered what a 5-hour long Follies would be like.

I saw a production of FOLLIES in Boston somewhat recently in a 200-seat theatre, with a performance space just bigger than you'd see in a black box theatre. While the performances weren't all that great, the material was just fine in that type of setting, with just the principles and the ghosts. I can't comment on Nunn's pacing and other directing tasks, but the size of the production shouldn't be an issue.
Also, it must be said: heaven forbid anyone actually SEE Nunn's FOLLIES before flipping out about it.

I've seen FOLLIES in an 80 seat dinner theatre. It made me feel dirty and strange...

Posted: 1/3/10 at 6:01pmSo I take it the new revival of Night Music has pacing issues?
#13Hello, Apocalypse: Trevor Nunn directing West End FOLLIES
Posted: 1/3/10 at 6:03pmWell they did reduce the running time by 10-15 minutes since the first preview. So the pacing has certainly improved.

Posted: 1/3/10 at 6:03pmMaybe he'll go with his original "concept" for the Night Music cast- the characters will all be 35 and their younger counterparts can be 16.

It's like when Anne Bancroft sent Joan Crawford to accept her Best Actress Oscar over also-ran Bette Davis.
