Coming in a bit late on this, but with regards to Betty Buckley - to some people's ears she can be quite shrill. She has great technique and passion, but her placement is a bit odd. Which is why, to answer your question, she's not on everyone's list.

Also, Andrea McArdle and Karen Ziemba are great belters - although not with the high soprano range of some of the others.

Add Julia Murney and Sara Gettelfinger to that list too...

I'm not getiing why Sutton Foster isn't on that list. She can sustain a high F with vibrato
Julia Murney's another great one.
And Idina most certainly has a vibrato...more often than not...

NANCY!!!
Nancy is not only an amazing singer and an amazing actress, she is also one of the nicest people you will ever meet.
I think we're leaving the guys out. I nominate Hunter Foster...

Melba Moore sings I Got Love on the Purlie Cast Album. This song actually was on the charts briefly at the time of the show. Those were the days! Whatever happened to Melba Moore?

There are quite a few, but I'll only mention some that stick out in my mind...
Idina Menzel
Sutton Foster
Nancy Opel
Cady Huffman (sp?)
Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio
Sherie Rene Scott
Bernadette Peters
I was also a bit disappointed, although not completely, with Beth McVey's singing portion of Urinetown on its tour. Nancy Opel really belted them out high...Beth kind of sounded low...if you heard both Nancy and Beth you would know the difference. Now, I am no voice expert, but what is head voice and chest voice?

If you sing out loud to soundtracks or the radio you're most likely using your chest voice and head voice is when you go into a higher register. Head voice is more like opera.

There's not a whole lot of mention for the guys....one of my all time favorite belters is Bryan D'Arcy James. He nearly blew me out of my seat in Titanic - lungs of steal on that one! :)
