I worked at Hurlyburly while a student at NYU. I also used to distrinute two-fers for Sugar Babies when Rip Taylor was in it. And I saw the last Saturday night performance of Carrie at the Virginia before it closed.

I bet the Nederlander organization decades later regrets selling the gorgeous Mark Hellinger to the church! If we could only get this back as a theater.

The first thing that stood out me when looking at most of these photos, was the almost total lack of traffic outside of these theatres. Maybe all of these pics were shot on a Monday afternoon. I traveled down to Broadway a lot from the Boston area during this time. I’m guessing it all looked a lot more glamorous on the weekends…

I loved seeing the buildings near these theatres:
Hotel Piccadilly
Ted Hook's Backstage
Gaiety Theatre
Roseland
Jilly's
Dancin' at the Broadhurst - next door to A Chorus Line
The marquee at the old Helen Hayes.
Gemini!
Cool.
