Historic viewership for Tony Awards telecast?

I remain fairly confident that despite the craze surrounding Hamilton, it will not be enough to significantly raise the number of viewers. While Hamilton is exciting, the season at large is indeed a typical season. Other than Hamilton being a cultural juggernaut, nothing else causes this season to stand out any more than seasons past. We have had cultural juggernauts before. Rent, for example, was huge at the time, but not so huge enough to make new people sit through an awards ceremony on TV.

You also have to take into account the popularity of cord cutting. Many people are ditching traditional broadcast TV, and will watch highlights on social media, others will wait until it is available on Hulu or Amazon.

At the end of the day, I don't suspect that viewership will be much higher than 6 to 7 million. Time will tell, but I certainly wouldn't be placing any bets that you will see higher numbers.

Early ratings in:

By my math that means somewhere between 7.9 - 8.4 million people watched this year (the ratings math is a bit confusing).

Lower than I personally expected though obviously the number can go up with DVR viewership etc...

33% increase.  Highest since 2004.  (I think that's the year stated.)

A bigger increase than I expected.  Good for them -- it was a great show!

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

Bigger than I expected.

Happy for it. The more eyes on Broadway, the better we are for it.

2009 was my favorite season. You had the Billy Elliott vs Next to Normal hype. You had a (albeit bad) West Side Story Revival and an excellent Hair revival. And you had Elton John and Dolly Parton performing live. Brett Michaels also got hit with that set piece. I'm not saying these things accounted for the spike but that was my favorite year in recent memory, particularly that opening number.

those are great ratings. I'm sure the tragedy in Orlando dampened the ratings a little bit. I know at first I wasn't sure if I wanted to watch. It was a great show though! Happy I did.

I think alot of people were interested in seeing what the hype was about Hamilton. 60 minutes dedicated 1/2 the show to it was almost a pre award show.  Also, after the horrible weekend, a lot of us wanted to be entertained

OK - my math was wrong, according to this it was 8.73 million which is pretty impressive!
