Honest thoughts on (title of show)

I thought it was gonna be a one joke kinda thing, but it was actually one of the cleverest, funny, touching shows I have seen in a long time.
The performers, the music and lyrics and the direction were terrific.
It will be interesting to see if the larger Broadway audience embraces it.
I will see it again and recommend it to everyone.

I haven't seen the show (going July 12th!), but I do have the CD and love it. I think that beyond the joke, there is a really sweet show there that has an enormous heart and is something I can really relate to. Plus I think it's funny as hell.
I can't wait to see it, and I hope this show can find some kind of an audience on Broadway. I think it deserves it.

I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.

I've only heard a few of the songs, but I loved the [toss] webisodes, and when I met Jeff Bowen in a restaurant I promised I'd go see it, so I have tickets for the 19th and I'm really excited.

I feel like the cast recording and the [tos] show have built up a fanbase for the show that it didn't have when it was at the Vineyard. When I went to see it there I had no desire to see it, seemed like it was just this in-joke I wouldn't understand, and came out absolutely loving it. You kind of end up feeling like you know the people onstage, and now with the tos show you kind of know these guys even more.
Yes, I also worry about it succeeding against the likes of Wicked and Mary Poppins and Lion King and all the gigantic musicals - but that's kind of the point of the show. It's the anti-Broadway musical - four chairs, one keyboard, four actors. You can have nothing and still have an awesome musical. I think the show and material is strong enough to let it live for a while.

i don't think the show itself is going to be the problem as much as the location. i LOVED the show when it was at The Vineyard, though. :) i hope they keep the voicemails...

I'm SO looking forward to this little show. It'll be a real nice change of pace after Gypsy, South Pacitic and In the Heights (and before Equus and Billy Elliot).
Wonderful Wizard...see you at the show on 7/12. I'm center orch, #110, row H!

I listened to the CD once and I remember it was a spoof, but that's about it. I'll have to try it again. I can't imagine paying $111 for it, though. I guess they are planning on trying to recoup during a short run.

I agree with the OP ... much ado about nothing. I didn't find it very funny, was not impressed with the cast, found the music to be forgettable ... to me it was a vanity piece that someone would put on at their local Elks club. I was not interested in their story at all .. didn't care in the least. Actually couldn't wait for it to be over. I think its going to be a very tough sell on Broadway, even if it does get love letter reviews.

well lord knows it doesn't compete with your night out at SPLASH, now does it?

The main reason I love this show is because it conveys a universal message: creating something you love and pouring your heart and soul into it. I think that's something everyone can relate to. Also, like some other posters have said, the characters feel very real, because it is basically the four of them playing themselves up there.
I can understand how it might not be everyone's cup of tea, but I certainly enjoy it and love the cast recording and can't wait to see it on Broadway!

and what's the point of that comment? Makes no sense to me whatsoever. We're all entitled to our opinions, and I didn't like [tos]. Deal with it.

I saw [tos] at the Vineyard and thought it was a charming little show that kind of wore out its welcome as it got just a little too cute and referential for its own good. I enjoyed it well enough, to be sure, but was ready for it to be over long before it was.
Based on the assorted threads, though, it looks like it has a more than devoted, not to say rabid, fanbase. Good luck to them, I wish them the best.

I havent seen the show yet but I love the recording. I personally love the show, but I'm not really sure it will sell to the mainstream commercial audiences. I really hope it does well though. It's hilarious!!!!!

I concur. And living in Chicago, I'm completely burned out on look-how-funny-we-are ______ The Musical! spoofs. They are everywhere. After seeing the original cast of Urinetown, the rest have been something of a letdown.

I saw this show at ARS NOVA and thought it was a lot of fun. It was what I had hoped MUSICAL OF MUSICALS was going to be , but wasn't for me. A clever show for theater lovers. But when it moved to VINEYARD I liked it a lot less. It seemed dwarved on the stage there so how it'll fair in an even bigger house I can only imagine. And the music being played by only a keyboard was fune for off-off broadway but now seemed a little thread bare. The score really needs all the help it can get.I can't see this running long on broadway. I , for one , see no reason to go back.

I saw this show towards the end of its run off-Broadway and once was enough for me. It will be interesting to see how it plays out on Broadway in a larger venue.

The only [tos] thing I've seen is the videos on YouTube. Funny stuff.
They talk about the TONYs a lot, but it's interesting that they decided to be the first show to open in the 2008-2009 season. I hope they do become 'the little show that could' like Xanadu, and stay on until June 2009. There's only four people in the cast, and I assume they don't need many stage hands, so it might not be expensive to run.
