Anyone with experience in the far back of the balcony at the Shubert?
I'm considering the $31.50 matinee seats for Blithe Spirit, but if they're partial view or truly bad seats, then I'll probably just pony up for TKTS pricing day of.
Any tips would be appreciated!

Posted: 6/4/09 at 3:35pmThe show never sells out, and they tend to close the balcony to dress the house...so you will most likely be able to move closer or even down to the Mezz.

Posted: 6/4/09 at 3:40pmNo, they sell tickets for all sections of the theater. It's the house manager's discretion when the Shubert's balcony is closed.

when I rushed we got about the 4th row of the mezzanine and they were wonderful.
for OP: I seem to vaguely remember sitting there for Bernadette Peters in Gypsy and I don't think they were bad seats.

Posted: 6/4/09 at 5:36pmI rushed it three times. The first was front row orchestra to the side and they were perfection, the second was fifth row mezz center (also great, but less leg room), and the third was second row balcony center and the view was okay but the seat was uncomfortable and the leg room was atrocious. Get there 2 and a half hours before curtain to guarantee no balcony. Bleh.

Well since student rush isn't an option for us...
If we decide to buy the rear balcony discount tickets in hopes of them closing the balcony to dress the house, I assume that buying for the slowest shows would provide the greatest chance of that happening?
Would that be Tues and Wed evenings? Sun Matinee? (Wed Matinee isn't an option due to work)
Has anyone had balcony seats on a day when they closed the balcony? What day of the week was it, and where did you get moved?
Thanks again for any insights you can share.

Posted: 6/5/09 at 12:04amI saw the oriuginal CHORUS LINE from the first row of the top balcony and it was a horrible seat. Could not see the back of the stage, missed a lot of "Music and the Mirror". It was the only ticket available. would gladly have paid more for a decent seat. Would NEVER do the balcony there again.

Posted: 6/5/09 at 10:25amI had a row G, right side seat for Blithe Spirit a few weeks ago and it was fine. Plenty of leg room and nice seat. Was able to see the entire stage just fine. It's a good deal to see that show for $36.50. I really enjoyed it.

Posted: 6/5/09 at 11:02amEven if they don't close the balcony the odds are that the staff would let you move. But keep in mind the show closes in 6 weeks, and if Angela wins the Tony Award the show's attendance could increase. Tuesday is the slowest day, but Wednesday evenings are also slow. But the show is almost always less than 900 in a 1500 seat house, so the ushers really won't have a problem if you ask...but you'll probably want to wait until it's closer to curtain before you do.
