I still think her turn in Pump Boys and Dinettes still deserves more credit than has been given for a show of her brilliant work.
She was dull as a doorknob in CHICAGO. Completely walked through the performance.
Enough with the Momma Rose casting of everyone and their Dad. Let some new roles be written and tackled. Momma Rose isn't the be-all end-all for musical theatre actresses. THE LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA proved just a few years ago that there is much fertile ground for new roles for women over 40.
PUMP BOYS has made Monk a comfortable Woman.
It is done over and over and over and we can add writer and creator to her list of acheivements
Foster, Both roles of the Edies proved that too.
I thought she was good in CHICAGO. I was there for Brooke Shields. But Monk stole the show for me in CURTAINS. Truly a sensational performance.

Add me to the list of those who are just plain tired of GYPSY. I'd love to see somebody revive MADAM, HAPPY HUNTING, or even DEAR WORLD with Monk.
And why does everyone insist upon referring to the role as 'Mama Rose'?? Never once in the play is she referred to as 'Mama Rose' The girls call her 'Mama', Herbie and her father call her 'Rose', and she bills herself as 'Madam Rose'. Just my pet peeve. Yes, I know: get a life.
Tired of GYPSY? And yet your avatar begs to differ...
oh, snap!
Well, put it this way: I NEVER get tired of listening to the OCR of GYPSY, but after seeing already seen Tyne Daly, Betty Buckley, Bernadette Peters (twice), and having tickets to see Patti LuPone, I'm not sure I really want to see another production any time soon.
How about Debra Monk in a revival of PAL JOEY instead? Once he gets off his skates, Cheyenne Jackson could play Joey. Or as Desiree in A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC. As mentioned above, there are plenty of other roles for women-of-a-certain-age other than Rose.
There should be just one theatre devoted to a never ending run of GYPSY so that every woman who was ever born to play that role can play it to their fans content.
hushpuppy, I think people use the phrase Mama Rose just to make it instantly clear what role they're referring to.
Of course Monk would kick ass as Rose, but it won't be on Broadway. Regionally, or perhaps at a large LA venue, it would be great. But, I think after this stint in CURTAINS, she's going to start getting the kind of roles hushpuppy is speaking of.
Sorry for all the dangling preps.
Oh, right. If people referred to someone playing 'Rose' in GYPSY, nobody would know to which part they were referring.
(Sorry for being so bitchy. As one gets older, one gets crankier about meaningless things. Like people who say "That's a whole 'nuther thing". Just what kind of word is 'nuther'?)
Obviously if they're saying GYPSY as part of the question, then yes, it is silly to use Mama in front of Rose. I was assuming otherwise. Sorry.
Monk as Desiree in NIGHT MUSIC makes my brain hurt. I can't see that all, don't know if you were serious.
And regarding calling her Mama or Momma Rose. I don't see why it's a problem. I think it's a habit the whole theatre world is used to. You may want to write Broadway.com and tell them to change their GYPSY page - because it says..
Patti LuPone as Mama Rose

Although I have to skip Ladies Who Lunch on that CD and could never see Monk as Desiree, somehow I think she would make a very good Rose. But as others have said, not right now. But it had better be sooner rather than later...tic tock...
Monk as Vera in PAL JOEY is a brilliant idea.

In just a matter of weeks, New Yorkers will see the definitive Mamma Rose: Patti LuPone.
From that point on, no one will wonder why so-and-so hasn't play the part.
Plain. Dot. Period.
If my daughter is not the winner, you'll be found hanging from a meat hook says Mama Lupone

"And why does everyone insist upon referring to the role as 'Mama Rose'??"
Probably because in a song called Rose's Turn she sings:
Mama's talkin' loud.
Mama's doin' fine.
Mama's gettin' hot.
Mama's goin' stong.
Mama's movin' on.
Mama's all alone.
Mama doesn't care.
Mama's lettin' loose.
Mama's got the stuff.
Mama's lettin' go.
Mama?
Mama's got the stuff.
Mama's gotta move.
Mama's gotta go.
Mama? Mama?
Mama's gotta let go.

There is already going to be a revival of Pal Joey with Christian Hoff and possibly Bernadette Peters.
Not sure if its been said, but Debra needs to play Ursula in the LITTLE MERMAID. During Curtains, that's all I could think about.
I first thought that Monk would make a great Rose a few weeks ago while watching the Drama Desk Awards and Chenoweth told Monk the: "I'm a pretty girl, Mama" line. She would be quite interesting and unstoppable.
Now, Monk as Vera in PAL JOEY would be quite a mistake, IMO. Donna Murphy played the role in a reading a while ago (she also played it in Boston), she should be brought back to the revival though I also love the Bernadette Peters idea.
