How come Debra Monk hasn't played...

I've yet to see Monk provide the rich layers necessary to the role.

I have, and I think she'd be perfect for the part. I'd also love to see her play the Old Lady in Candide.
"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe."

Maybe, but everyone loves her chewy center.

Monk has always been hit and miss for me.
While I've found her to be excellent in scene stealing comedic roles (much like Carmen in "Curtains,") there seems to be something missing when she is required to portray characters with a wider range of depth (her Joanne in "Company" is a prime example.)
Though she'd undeniably be an interesting Mama Rose, I'm not so sure she would be as excellent as you may think.

Tonya Pinkins: Then we had a "Lot's Wife" last June that was my personal favorite. I'm still trying to get them to let me sing it at some performance where we get to sing an excerpt that's gone.

What about Dolly?

I am sure she can do the role. She has the voice for it..and talent too--I like her a lot.. but I doubt if she can pull that star power to attract a lot people to see the show
I can see her as Mama Rose probably in Papermill Productions in New Jersey or
Huntington Theater here in Boston or NorthShore Productions in Beverly, MA but Broadway --I really doubt it.

Like Tyne Daly would have appeared to have it in her from the range she exhibited in "Cagney & Lacey"? For that matter, people questioned whether Angela Lansbury was a natural for the role before she assailed it. I certainly think Deb Monk has all of the right ingredients.

Having seen Daly & Lansbury in the role, Monk seems to be a natural

ljay, after seeing the Curtains performance on the Tony's I thought the exact same thing. She would also make a great Miss Hannigan in Annie.

When I first heard the Curtains recording, the first thing I thought of when I heard Monk was "Mama Rose!" I can definitely hear it, and I would definitely go to see it. As to whether or not she can pull it off, I think she can most certainly can.
A little swash, a bit of buckle - you'll love it more than bread.

But the only problem is - I think Broadway will be all Gypsy tired out after LuPone's turn.
I wouldn't mind if Papermill did GYPSY again - this time starring Monk.

Give Gypsy a rest. Monk could do "Call Me Madam"

I LOVE Gypsy and I was bored at Ravinia.
Patti was great but it's just too soon after Bernadette's revival to do it again.

I wouldn't see GYPSY starring Monk for free. LOL. Sorry to be nasty, that's usually not my style, but I really think that Monk would butcher that role! Her Joanne in COMPANY is dreadful and any time I have seen her play a character that has any sort of emotional depth beyond that of Maureen's mom in "Center Stage" (and even that is pushing it), she has fell really flat for me. Sorry to all the Monk fans, just a personal opinion.

Well i didn't see Debra Monk in Company but I too think she'd be a great Mama Rose. She could do no worse than the Bette Midler take which was certainly lacking in character development. She could certainly do no worse than Bernadette Peters which casting wise was just lacking in common sense. And Monk has such prescence on that stage. She was all I looked at when I watched Curtains. It was hard to keep your eyes off her.
I would buy a ticket to see her do Rose.

Everyone and their dog has played Mama Rose. Debra Monk can do it.

Her Joanne in COMPANY was excellent, we all have different opinions.
I thought she nailed it.
And if you ever saw her Emmy Award winning work on many TV shows you would know she is one of our most gifted versatile Actresses living today.

While Monk doesn't have the vocal stamina of Merman. I think she would sing the songs as brash as Merman. Not quite as powerful - but she certainly has the brashness.
Tyne sounded brash - but she lacked any vocal technique or support. Hearing a Rose with no vibrato kind of stinks.
And on an acting standpoint.. I have seen Monk in CHICAGO, CURTAINS, and on multiple TV shows. I think she is a very strong and diverse actress.

Debra Monk as Joanne sucked eggs.
She was good, but kinda bland, in "Center Stage".
She should revive "Happy Hunting" or "Call Me Madam"
