Ugh, Sunday was robbed. I knew that it wouldn't never win Best Revival, but I also never would have thought it would have walked away without anything! I really thought they had Scenic Design in the bag. Them losing this to SP really was my biggest dissapointment last night.
Where the hell did anyone state any "conspiracy theories"?
Every time someone concocts their own reasoning as to the state of the voters' minds when casting their votes, it is a conspiracy theory. Saying that the reason they didn't vote for Sunday because of the fact that it was projections or they don't like the advancement of technology or other such nonsense is just presumptuous babbling.
I was annoyed by the set design, almost as much as the tiny orchestra, in Sunday...It was cool for a minute, then became distracting and, finally, annoying.
AND the original set was so much more effective, including the chromolume.
sunday was robbed all around, IMO
Well I hope some of you fans out there called the police.

I blame Cubby Bernstein. He's well known for his sadistic sense of humor and he HATES SITPWG- he coordinated the shutout of the original production.
To those who are saying SOUTH PACIFIC's scenic design was "amazing"... what the **** are you smoking???
Let's break it down.
It was a bunch of fake sand dunes (on a raised structure), the inteirior of an house (WOW!), three "wash stalls" (that's so amazing...), a makeshift stage, a few Military maps (hanging on big ugly steel rods), and a painted backdrop.
Are you kidding me???
Even if you still think the SUNDAY projections were just "cute" or not that amazing, it doesn't matter because the projections played such a bigger part in their show (as opposed to SOUTH's).
The voters should have considered how the SUNDAY team was able to creatively utiliize their scenic design, by making it one of the biggest elements of the show. The brilliant intricate designs and details, of those projections, deserved an award.
End of story.
Well, actually the end of the story is that it lost to South Pacific.

Eh. You shoulda seen the original set by Tony Straiges. Now THAT was a masterpiece.

I'm a Tony voter. I voted for South Pacific. Just. To. Piss. You. Off.
Mission accomplished. What a glorious day.
I did, honey.
But you're missing the point of comparing these amazing visual designs to the uninspiring SOUTH sets.
Did you miss my "breakdown" ? I'm missing a couple of things but it is fairly accurate...
"I've never seen a theatre design make an audience gasp in awe so many times. At least we'll always remember that. "
I have it was called The Woman In White...let's face it they did it first.
let's face it, how many people actually saw that big joke?

In the end, it doesn't matter who won. The awards have been handed out. Honestly, the Tony voters confuse me. It seems like they gave nods to some innovative new shows (In the Heights and Passing Strange) but rejected a new spin on SITPWG? Doesn't make much sense. I thought the animation was stunning. I haven't seen SP, and I doubt the set they had up for the Tonys was anything like the one at the actual theater, but if there were similarities I don't seen any comparison between it and Sunday's projections.
I would just like to ask the South lovers if they'd mind sharing some of the glory for a bit, hm? The show won tons of awards; Sunday went away empty handed. Is it so hard for you to admit that, maybe, JUST MAYBE, it deserved any slight recognition? Especially in this category!
A GREAT POST BY A NEWBIE!
Amen to that. Thank you, somethingsomething.

Somethingsomething, that's just the point. I don't think the SUNDAY revival deserved any recognition. At all.
If there was a Special Tony for Worst Orcestration of a Magnificent Score, SUNDAY would have won hands down, and I'd have hunted down and killed any undeserving winner specifically to pry the Tony from their bloodstained hands and deliver to the perpetrators of the SUNDAY arrangement.
Alas, no. It will not happen. Lives have been saved.
ROSCOE. Just shut the hell up.

Now I see why everyone dislikes you so, TooDarnFullOfYourself.
Because it's set design is better...?

Why should I shut up? south said she'd like to ask a question. I answered the question. If my answer did not please you, I am indeed grieved.

Okay, orchestrations. I can't say I agree, but then again, I like the minimalism. Perhaps it's because I'm young and I wasn't around in the golden age and ignorant this and stupid that. But what else? The acting? Because Jenna Russel isn't Bernadette Peters? Because it can't be any good since a 20-something directed it?
You people are going to hate Broadway in ten, fifteen years.
You people are going to hate Broadway in ten, fifteen years.
Now there's a logical and well supported assertion. Why yes, we are all going to hate bway in 10-15 years b/c the orchestrations for SITPWG sucked and the scenic design was a powerpoint presentation.
Because people like different things.

No, something. No one thinks you are young, not around in the golden age, ignorant this/stupid that. No one said any such thing.
Goodness how you folks jump to conclusions.
I thought the performances were not good. If you're interested, you can do a search to see what I've posted on the performances.
The show isn't bad because a 20-something directed it. It is bad because it is ill-cast and ill-directed and ill-orchestrated.
In my opinion, at least. They're just opinions. Some agree with me, some disagree. Lighten up.

You're taking what I'm saying too literally. I simply mean, that the people behind the shows want to make money. They cannot make money by pretending like Broadway is today as it was 40 years ago. It's just not going to happen. There's another generation to market towards, and it is very different than the last. Sunday didn't make money, but it's subject material isn't designed for that. If they'd taken the Little Mermaid and done that with projections, it would've been a different story. Sunday's orchestrations are just one example of many similar orchestrations to come. Personally, I think they're just ahead of the times.
As for the powerpoint presentation comment, I would say that does not even justify a response. I mean...well, it really just doesn't.
By the way, I'm not really interested in hearing what you have to say about the show's performances, Roscoe. We obviously have differing views, ha.
