I'm curious what the reaction would have been had these boards existed back then when this happened. From what I've read of the Tony history the rules were more inflexible back then (such as the option to petition for a category change not existing, and thus William Daniels refusing a nomination for 1776 because according to the billing he would have been nominated as a featured actor). I'm guessing it must have been a pretty huge announcement that Kert would be eligible for a nomination.

as has been rehearsed here innumerable times, when a show, like this one, is an open run, it cannot be "extended" and the "on sale to" date has zero to do with when it is closing. It may not make it to 2/27/17, or it may make it to 5/27/27, but the info you supplied does not speak to either.

It hardly seems to be causing much excitement in NY. Close it down I say. Let another show open there in the spring

Yeah, a million dollars a week is hardly anything to be excited about.

I was under the false assumption the show was not open ended. Thanks for clearing things up...
The info I posted was simply to say that the show will pass the 1/15/17 date... In theory...

Good. As it reads I think some would read more into that.

I'm not personally speculating that this will happen but she's currently doing The X Factor UK... which usually finishes around Christmas (because in most of the past years they've gotten the Christmas #1). So assuming she doesn't have anything else and Leona's contract is up, she could join the show in January but wouldn't do so before then.

I'm curious, too. But not only were there no message boards, even Manhattan probably had about a half-dozen TV channels. Notice of the rule exception may have been little more than a couple of inches on a back page of THE TIMES and other newspapers (which, as you know, were more numerous then).
A groundswell of opposition seems unlikely to me. The affected population would only be actors whose names appeared above the title when they took over a vehicle role in one of the big musical hits of a season. Off-hand I can't think of another example.
One wonders whether Mr. Daniels' protest the year before put the Tony committee in a more accommodating mood, or whether there was simply a shortage of available Best Musical Male Stars.
What grosses was the OP looking at? I'm looking at w/e 9/11 and they made almost a million dollars, and was 5th highest grossing of the week. Considering post-Labor Day is when most grosses drop precipitously, which most every other show did even with the Broadway Week promotion (and Cats didn't need to participate in) the fact that Cats did so well only proves it can sustain itself through the holidays, if not further.
(And let's face it, most people don't even care about Leona, or or in the US even remembers who she is anyway, so I don't see her leaving as having any effect on grosses.)
