I've never seen Mamma Mia! so go ahead spoil the ending. I don't give a hoot. what is more interesting is how the show got up to that point, not the actual act of it happening.

Dolly ends up with Horace Vandergelder.
Skye and Sarah end up together, as do Nathan and Adelaide (that would be Guys and Dolls).
Miss Saigon...oh...that's a sad one. Dead, ya know.

Oh...and Atlanta burns in GONE WITH THE WIND.
And Rosebud is the sled...CITIZEN CANE, in case you were wondering.

I mean...honestly. These are CLASSICS.

and really? guys and dolls and hello dolly? Well, if you know that it's a comedy, then you know that everyone will end up together, and if it's a tragedy, then chances are everyone, or at least the main characters will die.

oohhhh, I'm so pissed off. someone just ruined Oedipus Rex for me and told me he slept with his mom and then poked his own eye out! the nerve! I hadn't gotten around to reading that one yet.

"but the people that were upset seemed to show some interest in the show, and when I show some interest in something, I look it up."

Well not everyone does that.

"So if they hadn't known about it by now, they were never gonna know it."

Aren't there regional productions ever produced? This show isn't completely dead.

Just because something is a CLASSIC doesn't warrent people to ruin things for others who haven't seen something. I haven't seen every single "classic" show in existence.

Perhaps (if you are a Harry Potter fan) your feelings would be different had someone spoiled the ending of one of the books...

Please forward me a list of shows you are planning on seeing...that way I can get you the ending before you see it!

Don't blame others for discussing commonly known plot points in classic shows. That is absolutely ridiculous.

If the narrator had not died, I'm pretty sure the Baker's Wife would not have become tree cushioning.

The show wouldn't end the way it does, had the narratar had not died.

Oh, and the narratar dying isn't a major plot point, really.

I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.

"Don't blame others for discussing commonly known plot points in classic shows."

This isn't as "common knowledge" as something like Romeo & Juliet or Titanic. Just because Sondheim and Into the Woods are popular within musical theater doesn't mean everyone knows about what happens in the show.

I'm not saying it's not okay to discuss it, just to be courteous of others who haven't seen it and merely post a spoiler warning. People posted "spoiler warnings" when discussing the Hairspray movie - even though that's been on Broadway since 2003 and has given a majority of the people here "ample time" to know what goes on.

Except, of course, that major plot points have changed dramatically from the Broadway production to the new film of HAIRSPRAY.

If INTO THE WOODS were an underproduced cult musical that wasn't readily available to anyone who has a dvd player or vcr, I think you MIGHT have a point.

But it is one of the most popular musicals of the last two decades...and one of the most accessible, as it has been recorded and been made available through many means.

And, frankly, spoiling the end of Harry Potter right now would be a SH*Tty thing to do, as it is brand new and people are hoping to find out for themselves. But 20 years from now? No one should have the right to be offended if the ending is discussed freely and without spoiler warnings. I mean, you'd have had TWENTY YEARS TO GET AROUND TO READING IT!

I see your point, but did you ever think someone might be trying to avoid watching the video of it? Perhaps because some theater is doing it somewhere in this country.

You have every right to discuss it, just put a small notice that it is a spoiler. A spoiler is a spoiler whether or not you believe it is "common knowledge."

Millie, I understand what you are saying, and I am a huge Potter fan, and would've been outraged if someone told me the ending before I got a chance to read it.

but a: Deathly Hallows just came out, while ITW has been out for 20 years, as Robbie J said

B: there are numerous regional and high school productions of it all the time, as JoeKv said

C: look at Robbie's wonderful point again at your Hairspray example. things had changed in the movie, that's why spoiler warnings were on.

and if you had opened my post under a different title, you would've read the same information about the narrator.

If this had been a thread giving away details about a show that hasn't even been our for a year, like Curtains, or Spring, I would agree with you. But 20 years is 20 years. people have had time to see it, or learn about it, and maybe that they know a little bit more about it now, though unwillingly, they will actually go rent or buy a copy out of heightened interest.

So...say I wanted to specifically discuss the fact that Eliza Doolitle comes back to Henry Higgins at the end of MY FAIR LADY...and I decide to post "What if Eliza Doolittle Didn't Come Back to Higgins at the End?"

Should I really be expected to put **SPOILER** anywhere?

Fact is, we are on a board dedicated to theatre, with a heavy leaning towards musical theatre. These are the basics.

and im kinda pissed that you posted a spoiler and dont seem to care.

a spoiler is a spoiler and there should be a notice before you just openly give away a piece of the plot.

none of these Grease reviews have spoiler warnings in them. what if I haven't seen it ?

then again, is in the case with ITW, I would've had to have been under a rock for the past 20 years, (more in Grease's case) especially being on a message board discussing broadway shows.

That's the thing that's killing me about THIS particular show.

You can SEE the original cast of this show just as easily as you could listen to the original cast recording of this show.

And you've been able to see this show in videogram format for well over a decade!

And, as Pippin points out, this is a Broadway board. Not a board about politics that just happens to be discussing ITW.

yes. actaully.
my school is putting on a production of it this fall.

this is exactly what several of us are trying to get across. you dont know who has seen the production and who has not. and you should not assume that since its been so long since a broadway production, that is okay to spoil the plot.

you do not have the power to speak for everyone.

but you've already spoiled it for yourself by listening to the music. you know where the show will go, how it will end, and what the character's motives are. I just mentioned that someone died. by listening to the OBC, you are already aware that other characters beside the narrator die, so don't whine about a spoiler when you have already heard the score before going in.

and the grease reviews are titled:

or simply

none of those titles give away the plot.

If you don't know the plot of GREASE by now...

The point some of us are trying to make is that the general knowledge about musicals on this site is high. Very high. And, frankly, Pippin wanted to discuss this particular plot point from an extremely popular musical.

I just don't think people should expect spoiler warnings for shows that have been around for as long as ITW.

Were this site called BROADWAYFORBEGINNERS.com, perhaps one could reasonably expect spoiler warnings of the type you're looking for. But it's not.

im not whining and im not going to argue.

it is just a general rule around here that if you want to discuss anything related to plot, you post a warning notice for spoilers.

and you know that. so out of respect for others, next time post a warning.

who's Lucy? I haven't seen the show! that should have been a spoiler warning.
