So, I tried searching for another thread about this but couldn't (it's a hard topic to search for...) and excited to hear people's thoughts here.
Why hasn't Hunter Foster been on Bway since Little Shop???
I would say maybe he is taking a break from performing, but he is repeatedly doing regional theatre productions for the last few years (Pitt CLO, Ogunquit, Signature, Cape...). Now I understand that one can't just say "I want to be in another Broadway show" BUT to go from one of the A-list Bway males (with a Tony nom) in the early 2000's to not doing a show for over 5 years???
I remember back then when Raul Esparza and Norbert Leo Butz where sort of B-listers, at the time they were first establishing themselves as leading men... but what happened to Hunter, he just like fell off the Bway map!

I am sure you know this, but a career in the theater (a solid career) isnt all about Broadway! Broadway is feirce but he is doing other GREAT work, He did a feirce production of Kiss of the Spiderwoman at Signature in DC, and now he is doing a Hit off Broadway show called happiness!! He has a Great Career!!
Oh no.. I of course know that a career in theater doesn't revolve around Broadway... but at the same time, I don't think you can argue that it culminates with Bway.
And yes, he did Spiderwoman, Frankenstein, and Happiness... as well as regional staples (monty, lend me a tenor, etc.)
But, those are all is the last 2 years... what was he doing in 2005, 2006, 2007 (first half, Frankenstein opened at end of 07)??
It just seems that for someone who was the leading character man of Bway to go to only regional and a few off-bway shows, is a "step down"... in terms of it lasting for 5 years.

He's done FRANKENSTEIN, DUST and HAPPINESS all within the past 2 years. He was in THE PRODUCERS for quite a while. He was in MISTER ROBERTS and THE GOVENMENT INSPECTOR and KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN and MODERN ORTHODOX, as well.
In fact, THE PRODUCERS was his last Broadway show; he closed out the production as Leo Bloom.

He's actually had a pretty solid career of jumping from show to show.
Plus, he's a tough sell. He's not a typical leading man. He's not a Fieyro or a Phantom. He's got a uniquely nasal voice (which seems to run in the family) which gives him that geek charm. He's perfect in the role he is in now. He plays the creep pretty well I must say. I'm sure it's only a matter of time before he's back on Broadway. I'm sure he's not avoiding it, or vice versa.
He's also a writer--he wrote the book for "Bonnie & Clyde" which was in NYMF last year.
I'm always impressed with him and Jen Cody. They seem to bounce from show to show.
Echoing what Yankee said, Hunter left LITTLE SHOP and went directly to THE PRODUCERS. He stayed there through the end of the run. So that's where he was in the years you question.
He's such an awesome talent. I certainly wouldn't be surprised if it's by choice rather than desperation that he's doing smaller productions.

Hunter is a busy boy... not only has he been acting his butt off, but has also been working on the book for a production of Sleepy Hollow with Matt Connor.
The new musical by Matt Conner and Hunter Foster is being workshopped this summer, and may be presented duringthe Capital Fringe Festival in July.
