re: Hypothetical 'Best Song' Tony

BUMP.

I guess I'm desperate for attention. It happens. But I do hope this thread doesn't atrophy with only three full lists...

re: Hypothetical 'Best Song' Tony

I think vote splitting would happen often enough to garuntee that a hypothetical Best Song Award would at least not be from the same show as the Best Score alot of the time. Sometimes the best song does come from a crap score (Cats anybody?) and alot of shows could easily ramp up the sympathy vote to earn themselves such honours.

re: Hypothetical 'Best Song' Tony

Please, no Tonys for best song. When that happens the scores will be even worse than they are now.

re: Hypothetical 'Best Song' Tony

Given how much criticism Wicked's score received, I don't think that any song from Wicked would have won. (I personally think the criticism was unjustified, but it was definitely there.) "It's a Fine, Fine Line" is the best song from Ave Q, but I think that "Lot's Wife" would have won.

re: Hypothetical 'Best Song' Tony

Breeze Off the River was indeed wonderful, but (heehee) my pick that year would've been Big Ass Rock.

re: Hypothetical 'Best Song' Tony

I would go with "You Walk With Me" for 2001

re: Hypothetical 'Best Song' Tony

Peter Filichia wrote an article about this for Playbill.com back in 1998. He gives his list of "Best Song" winners dating back to the first year of the Tonys. Of course, since this article is from 1998 it doesn't include 1999 -- present. Pretty interesting choices though.

re: Hypothetical 'Best Song' Tony

The whole score of The Full Monty deserved the Tony. I like the Producers but it didn't deserve ALL of the hype it got.

I also agree with "Little Preist" for 1979 :)
If Percy Blakeney were in Les Mis....

Percy: Sink me! If it isn't Javvurt!
Javert: Zsah-vair, it's pronounced Zsah-vair.
Pecry: But it's spelled J-A-V-E-R-T Javvurt.
Javert: Repeat after me Zsah...Zsah....
Percy: Oh! Zsa-Zsa! Like the Gabor sister! Well I personally have always prefered Eva.
Javert: (Looks for gun)

re: Hypothetical 'Best Song' Tony

If there was a Tony for "Best Song" I don't know what the Tony voters would decide but I know what songs I would vote for if I was a Tony voter in certain years.

1987- I would vote for "On My Own" from "Les Miserables" in spite of the fact that Frances Ruefelle is not my favorite Eponine.

1991- I think I would vote for "I'd Give My Life For You" from "Miss Saigon."

1997- I believe this was the year "The Lion King" dayviewed on Broadway, I would vote for "Shadowland" though "Circle of Life" would be the song that would probably win.

re: Hypothetical 'Best Song' Tony

For the last 10 years:

1996: Seasons of Love (RENT)
1997: This is the Moment (JEKYLL AND HYDE)
1998: Wheels of a Dream (RAGTIME) *This was a tough choice for me. IMO the entire score for Ragtime is one of the best scores ever written in the history of musical theater if not the best ever*
1999: NO AWARD *IMO, awful, awful scores this year*
2000: This is What it Is (THE WILD PARTY)
2001: Let it Go (THE FULL MONTY) with We Can Do It (THE PRODUCERS) not too far behind
2002: Run Freedom Run (URINETOWN) again, followed very closely by Gimme, Gimme (THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLE) which was the only great song in an otherwise mediocre score.
2003: You Can't Stop the Beat (HAIRSPRAY)
2004: Lots Wife (CAROLINE OR CHANGE) tied with probably Defying Gravity (WICKED)
2005: Fable (THE LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA)
2006: So far, I'd pick Show Off (THE DROWSY CHAPERONE) or The Color Purple (Reprise) (THE COLOR PURPLE)

No 25th Annual anywhere? I really think Prayer of the Comfort Counselor or the I Love You Song are great stand alone songs.

re: Hypothetical 'Best Song' Tony

Just going with years Im very familiar with -

1966 - If He Walked Into My Today (Mame)
1971 - The Ladies Who Lunch (Company)
1979 - A Little Priest (Sweeney Todd)
1984 - Finishing the Hat (Sunday in the Park)
1988 - No One is Alone (Into the Woods)
1990 - It Needs Work (City of Angels)
1991 - The American Dream (Miss Saigon)
1993 - a tie between Where You Are and The Day After That (both from Kiss of the Spider Woman)
1996 - La Vie Bohem
1998 - Till We Reach That Day (Ragtime)
2002 - Gimme Gimme (TMM, mainly cuz of Sutton's Debut performance imo)
2004 - Lot's Wife (Caroline or Change)
2005 - You Won't Suceed on Broadway (Spamelot)
2006 - I Want More (Lestat, and i know your gonna hate me for this but I think that its one of the few good songs in the show [i loved the show btw] and I think Fischer's performance brings the show to a halt and is amazingly performed giving her this non exsistant Tony)

re: Hypothetical 'Best Song' Tony

THANK YOU! I actually thought that show was hideously awful, but I do like the music, even thought the production was worse than some high schools. ANYWAYS-I agree that allison fischer didn't get near enough credit for her performance, and that song would 100% garunteed be nominated for this category, although i don't know if it would win. Maybe she should have been nominated for supporting actress, but she wouldn't have won, and she's got time...she's just a kid. I'm sure we'll be seeing more of her, as well as a tony maybe someday.

re: Hypothetical 'Best Song' Tony

For this season, I would have to pick either "As We Stumble Along" from Drowsy (I like it better than "Show Off") or pretty much ANYTHING from Wedding Singer cause the music is so awesome (and should win best original score this year, IMO).

I'm sorry as much as i enjoy Caroline or Change... Lot's Wife? please it is a tacky remake of Rose's Turn.... hell she even almost wore the same dress

re: Hypothetical 'Best Song' Tony

Can someone explain to me why Fable and Dividing Day are often considered the best songs in Piazza? I LOVE Say it Somehow, Statues and Stories, and Octet all better. Just me?

Just for fun, I'm gonna fill out the nominees for last year:
Astonishing
The 'I Love You' Song
probably something from Piazza
Find Your Grail
maybe Dirty Rotten Number (though I'd vote for Here I Am)

And if the best song winner was ever from Big River, I'd say it'd be Waitin For My Light to Shine.

re: Hypothetical 'Best Song' Tony

I don't like the idea of isolating one song from a musical score and giving it an individual award anymore than I like the idea of other potential isolations, such as a Best Line of Dialogue From a Play... or Best Spot Light... or Best Prop... or Best Costume (for one outfit only)... ... or Best Set Piece... or Best "Dance Step."

It really doesn't make sense to me. These elements are already being honored in broader, more cohesive and impacting categories.

Hey, how 'bout Best On-Stage Couple? Or Best Stage Kiss? Or Best Bitchy Comeback? Or Best Animal Performance?

re: Hypothetical 'Best Song' Tony

Honestly, the one Tony Award category I feel they DO need to add is Best Sound Design.

Let's get Broadway caught up with the 21st century.
