I actully agreed with almost every cut made to the movie except for "Goodbye Love." I will never get over that but I am trying to move on...
Anyway, I thought "Out Tonight" was so amazingly done-one of my favorite onscreen numbers.

I liked "Christmas Bells" a lot. It was amazing!

I liked the parody of "Rent" that takes place in the movie, "Team America". Very funny stuff.
I think something that would've helped the movie with what Chris Columbus was talking about with Goodbye Love (the emotional stuff), that the scene with Roger & Mark where they would be singing would be silent. Like they would both express anger but not with words or song. But then they start singing when Roger leaves the loft & Mimi starts singing. I liked Rosario's performence in Goodbye Love. At least the whole song wouldn't be cut out. It still made me very sad. I still love the movie though
I too prefer the show, but the movie is enjoyable to put on in the background.

I didn't care for the film. It didn't effect me near as much as the show did. I feel like they lost the entire point of the show. For one, it's a rock opera. That's what it's known for. It is based on LaBoheme - an opera - so it makes since that it would be basically sung through. I think they should have just kept that, it would have made some of the "book" scenes in the movie better. The lyrics weren't meant to be spoken, so it sounds dumb when the characters rhyme. I also think they lost the gritiness of the film and some of the performances weren't so great. I still stand by my point that this movie - if done well - should have had Oscar buzz and some nominations. It's an amazing show and a big hit on Broadway and around the world/country. I just think it was in the wrong hands. Also, I don't like the idea of casting the original cast. Sure they have formed a bond, but they look to old for the film. My friends kept saying "why are these middle aged people whining about not having a job. why don't get they get off their asses and get employeed." I just don't thinkt hat casting choice worked that well.
So, kind of funny story. My sister and I both love RENT (both the movie and the show) and we talk about it plenty. My aunt decided that she hated it, without ever seeing it or even knowing what it was really about. So we forced her to watch it two nights ago on Starz. She was just starting to get into it, and then Rosario sang for the first time. Now, my aunt isn't a huge fan of female singers to begin with, but she thought Rosario's voice was absolutely horrible. (Personally, I think she did a good job with the role but I don't love her singing) She got over the fact that she didn't like Rosario singing and started getting into it again, and then Angel died. She was soooo mad! She just kept asking why the "cute funny one" had to die instead of the "annoying screechy one". After that the rest of the movie was sort of lost on her. All she kept saying was, "but he was so cute in his little skirts and tights and wigs!" Of course we pointed out that she had said the skirts and tights were ugly but she said, "Well they were! Everything he wore was ugly. But it was cute on him because he was a boy."
Oh well, can't say we didn't try. She actually watched it again on her own today, but said she only watched right up until Angel died and she said she skipped all of Mimi's singing parts. Her favorite song? What she calls the "we'll cover each other song" lol.
Maybe I can finally listen to my RENT cd (obcr) with her in the car without her screaming at me!

"...annoying screechy one..."
Ideeeena?
Lol, no, she meant Rosario! Although she didn't like "Over the Moon" either. She said, "This is stupid!" We told her it wasn't meant to be taken seriously, but that didn't make her feel any better about it.
Personally I don't love Rosario's voice, but I did like her portrayal of Mimi. And I certainly wouldn't describe her as annoying and screechy! But since my aunt was determined not to like it before she even saw it I guess she had to find lots of things to complain about!

:) Thanks for the clarification. I saw the show twice and the film twice in at the movies, a few times on DVD and last night and today on STARZ. Although I liked it, I would say that there are several voices in that film that, at various times, could fit be the "annoying screechy one" description.
I kind of liked Rosario and I really liked Tracie Thoms as Joanne.
I still enjoy seeing San Franciso's Golden Gate Theatre in the background in the NYC New Year's Eve scene. I'm sure most people don't notice it unless they live in SF or NYC.

I like pretty much everything about the show better than the movie, but I thought the movie was great. Tracie was a real asset. LOVED her. I really missed Halloween and Christmas Bells.
Worst for me--- "Tango Maureen"- hated the dance scene !!
Way too cheesey !!!
That is my favorite scene in the whole movie. I thought it was brilliantly done. With Idina in the red. I LOVED that part.
You know, watching it in the movie theater or on DVD I never really thought of any of them as screechy, but when I saw it on Starz (three times now) I did hear parts where at least two of them came across as screechy. Is there something to do with the sound on Starz? I also noticed that neither during "Tango: Maureen" or "Over the Moon" did the microphone do the echo thing it is supposed to . . . or was that just me?
I loved Tracie . . . if Fredi couldn't be in it I'm glad she was. And again, I didn't dislike Rosario . . . I actually loved her acting, just didn't really care for her voice.
The more I see the movie version (especially now that I've seen the show a few more times) the more I miss songs like "Happy New Year" and "Goodbye Love". I love "Halloween" but for some reason don't miss it as much while watching the movie.
my dvd doesnt make the echo either! i think it has to do with how they programmed the sound
I loved the movie. was already a major major RENThead when it came out, went to the midnight premier at the ziegfeld, have watched it several times. I like both- i think the performances in the movie are spectacular, the orchestrations are really great as well, and its just a pretty film. I agree that there could be some better things. im still on the fence about the whole engagement party situation, but "maybe now you two can get back together" is one of my favorite film lines. I saw RENT with my dad for the first time waaaay back when and he wasnt so into it. (republican, in his 60s at the time) I took him to see the film in the theaters and he really enjoyed it- he got the message, and could relate to the characters- A 73 year old republican! i think that really says something. it really speaks to a wider audience. and not cause its washed out or toned down, i think its less in-your-face and more sensitive. which lets the message really speak
after seeing the show again for the first time after the movie, there are just some things you cant replace from a live show. but film's a different medium. and as far as translating the story to the film medium goes, i think they did a pretty good job. i miss goodbye love and christmas bells, though.
All i have to say is id rather watch the dvd than see rent with the current cast :-/ anthony rapp remarked at a book signing this year that hed never seen a whole cast as committed onstage as the original cast. which i think still holds true when comparing the film performances to the current bway cast. not that there arent some great ppl in the cast right now.
and rosario is my favorite mimi ive ever seen.

I love the movie, no question, but there is something about sitting in the Nederlander (yes, even now) that makes seeing Rent amazing. No movie can capture that and I don't expect it to try, but, wow, you haven't seen Rent until you've seen it there.

If they didn't take all the funny parts out, sh'd have known that already.
It is a *fabulous* movie and I actually enjoyed it more than the stage show... But I love them both.
I thought Rosario was the best Mimi ever and Tracie made me like Joanne.
Don't get me started about Adam and Anthony I have too much love for those boys. Jesse rocks. Wilson IS an Angel LOL
Taye shines in the small but important/love-to-hate role of Benny.
I love having the main OBC members in the movie... And being to actually SEE Roger, Mark, Angel and Collins on the subway sinsing about Santa Fe

i prefer the movie, i think i need the sets that the film provides to appreciate where they are and what theyre doing. I had to see the stage show twice to even keep up with how this is inside and over there is outside and up there is another building entirely, etc. I cant help it im a visual person.
It was a good movie, not one of my favorites. I really loved The Tango Maureen Scene, it was just fun too watch. I was so, so sad they cut Goodbye Love!
I think the best part of the dvd is watching it with the commentary!
When I first heard of the movie plans, I was a bit apprehensive. It's so easy to make crappy movie musicals. To my surprise, it's a good movie. It might not capture what is produced on stage, but it brings a better sense of reality. The stage musical can be abstract, but the movie brought the scenes to a very concrete reality.
I thought the scenes were well thought out, and it had a good feel. I was sad they cut some of the good scenes (Goodbye Love, etc.), but it worked nonetheless. If you don't compare it to the original, it's a good movie.
I liked the tango scene. I even ended up buying Joanne's necklace from back when they had all those Rent auctions (not because it was in the movie, but because I thought it was really pretty--and I've gotten a lot of compliments for it).
It's hard to say "OMG. It's the BEST MOVIE EVER." We can't forget about the great classic movies that were long before Rent was even conceived (y'know, the standards, Gone with the Wind, Citizen Kane, Vertigo, et cetera).
I can't really compare the movie and the stage production. They both have their ups and downs. Anyway, good movie. I'd watch it if it's on. It's great to see (most of) the OBC doin' their thang.
I love this thread already! For this movie, I did alot of prepping. First, I live in Pennsylvania (yes near Lancaster)...and I drove all the way to the city to catch the first official showing of RENT (to the public) at midnight at the Ziegfeld with god knows how many people. And we got to see Tracy Thoms and Anthony Rapp two rows behind us watching it as well.. Then drove all the way back home to catch the first showing in Pennsylvania at 8:00 in the morning. On top of that bought tickets to the rest of the showings that day. I saw it 14 times in theatres before it was kicked out of the theatres. Then waited at Walmart at Midnight the day before it was released....
The sign of a fan. All because I thought this movie was amazing and the fact I was waiting 10 years for a movie to be released.
Does anyone know if they shot Angel's post death scene in Green-Wood cemetery in Brooklyn?

It does look like it's in NY but I don't know about that scene. A good portion of the film was shot on soundstages and locations in and around San Francisco. There are a lot of graveyards in nearby Colma (known in these parts as "the city of the dead") so maybe it was shot there?
I was actually thinking about creating a thread like this, but taking the opposing stance. Thinking this was too negative a route, I didn't make one. But now that you mention it...
I tried to love the movie. I really did. But re-watching it on STARS ON DEMAND, I still got the same impression. The movie seems too forced and too cold. I kept feeling like I was out of the action, and not in it. Maybe this has something to do with the pacing, which to me seems odd in itself. I like this musical, but did not like the film in many respects.

That is a good point. Many other musicals that have been turned in their movie musical, especially in recent years, have had good commerical sucess and at least one Oscar nod. While many broadway fans enjoyed the movie, in general, it did not appeal to the public the way other movie musicals have.
I have also had the urge to watch the movie lately. However, when I had this notion, I went to get my movie, and relized that it wasn't on dvd shelf! I don't remember if I lent it to someone or where it disappered, too. I might have to buy another one soon, because I can't live without it toooo long.

eh, there have been LOTS of awesome movies that havn't had good commercial succes/oscar buzz, you know? I mean the oscars in general are really.. a popularity contest, I guess? I mean think about it- when a whooole bunch of critics and stuff happen to love a movie and think it'll be a big oscar hit, it generally is. Not always, but generally. But if a movie is really good but for whatever reason happens to get mediocre reviews, then its totally overlooked a lot of times for the oscars. Now, I uuusually tend to agree with oscar nominees and stuff, there are occasionally movies that I think are AMAZING (RENT included, but others too), that dont get any recognition at all. So really, its just chance for a movie to do well. And, maybe I'm wrong and maybe a lot of people just dont like RENT- thats a possibility too. But, a lot of people I've talked to, even out of the ny area, who aren't that into broadway, HAVE really liked it :)
