Posted: 8/13/13 at 8:14amHaving seen Dreamgirls in previews in Boston I went to see Nine when I went to NYC because I could not believe that it won the Tony over Dreamgirls...When I left I knew why..as great as Dreamgirls was, Nine was better I loved it Raul Julia and the women were amazing and Getting Tall was one of the best ending songs I totally related. I also went to see the Antonio version and again I loved it...the cast -he was adorable ..great show..the movie starts and I am hearing the music and thinking Rob Marshall nailed it ,,,it is beautiful ..then the real movie starts and it doesn't have enough music..cutting ..what 5 really great songs..WTF...BE ON YOUR OWN was one of the best songs and no GETTING TALL....the entire point of the musical was lost...I have to say I liked the cast..had no problem with DDL it was totally the direction or misdirection and the script...I still think Rob Marshall is amazing and will come back..he just blew it on this one....

Someone -- glad you dug the Leveaux revival of NINE. As I'm sure you've noticed by now, opinions differ all over the place about pretty much everything.
I'll certainly agree that Leveaux's staging had some visual stuff going on -- the big rotting fresco and the water and all that, hard to miss, and for me pretty symbolic of the whole bloody enterprise (rot decay dissolution and sinking to the bottom of the ocean were certainly sensations I felt while watching it -- Leveaux really should be more careful when choosing his metaphors). What Leveaux's staging didn't have, for me at least, was any real energy or life, it was all about rot decay and sinking and mournful malaise, as opposed to Tune's more Fellini-esque staging. I think I wrote somewhere about Marshall's film that, with his characteristic stupidity, Marshall missed one of Fellini's most endearing traits: JOY, and the same was certainly true of Leveaux's soggy waterlogged production.

I would probably blame David Leavaux too.
How any director can massacre Fiddler on the Roof is beyond me.
I didn't see his Nine but I can just imagine.
I will be staying away from Romeo and Juliet.

It wasn't just the removal of a song or two, they added 3 males to fill in a couple of the females roles. They added dialogue from the movie. It sadly was a bit of a train wreck. I would have been happy if they told me in advance that was based on the movie,, not the tony award winning masterpiece .
I never thought it was possible to screw this show up, the music is stunning. They did, which is a pity cause there production of Avenue Q was outstanding.
Damn you Robb Marshall if it wasn't for your **** movie, I would never have had to suffer

Posted: 8/13/13 at 8:47pmThe copy of the script I have from Samuel French I purchased before the revival was produced, but it wouldn't surprise me if the deletion of "Germans at the Spa" was made permanent after that revival. It also had options in the script for changing the sex of some of the characters to male (including LaFleur). As for any other changes I'm guessing that they are relying on their small size to fly under the radar, as so many small companies do.
