I Disagree with everyone when it comes to All About Me

I went to see this show tonight, I don't have time to write much, all I can say is that if this show is worth seeing, it's because of the wonderful Michael Feinstein and the woman that plays the stage manager. Dame Edna is unfunny, gross, sexist, classist, ageist, etc. I just don't care for an alleged str8 man playing a woman, I find drag queens at gay bars a lot funnier and wittier.

"alleged str8 man"? Please! There's nothing remotely "gay" about him. Not to mention he's been married twice.

And if you think Dame Edna is all those things, you obviously don't get her humor.

I guess I take the "alleged" back, since I know nothing about his/her life. But a str8 man pretending to be a woman is always questionable for me.
Anyways, I do get her humor, I just don't find it funny.

My point is that the creation of the character critiques sexism, ageism, etc. I suppose the character is itself those things, but it's done as a matter of criticism.

But a str8 man pretending to be a woman is always questionable for me.

So George Hearn winning a Tony for his work as Albin in the original cast of La Cage Aux Folles is questionable for you?

How about Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis in the film version of Some Like It Hot?

Dustin Hoffman in Tootsie?

What about that family classic Mrs. Doubtfire? That also questionable?

Those actors did it for one movie or 2. But they don't constantly play a certain role.

You said always.

If those examples that adamgreer named had been sitcoms instead of movies, and those actors had played those characters, in drag, for years, then would it be questionable?

Also, unless you're Avril Lavigne, it's spelled "straight."

I am happy being me though, but I was just informed she is the only person allowed to type "str8".

Hm, I like how whenever we don't agree with someone we just get at their spelling and grammatical issues and avoid the topic altogether.

Thank you for your review, I'm glad that you've stated your opinion.

It was more like one time, but it was spread over a couple of posts. It just seems like a wasted argument that was off topic. I don't think what you're talking about in this post is off. But as I said, this wasn't the posters intention for the thread so...

You are certainly entitled to your opinion but you just called Dame Edna's legions of followers morons. So you didn't enjoy her? That doesn't make her unfunny, she's just not your cup of tea. You don't have to drag those that love her in the mud.

You're acting like Feinstein is doing a show with Larry the Cable Guy.

I wish he would do a show with Larry the Cable Guy and let the Dame take the stage all by herself like she should be doing.

and Corine, I hope you do interview Kenny. I look forward to your insightful interviews more than Barbara Walters. At least you have what it takes to ask the tough questions.

Because blackface in itself is not offensive. It has a certain social, archetypal connotation that is almost exclusive to America. Drag doesn't have it, and really blackface in other parts of the world doesn't either (remember that video of Ragtime being performed in Australia in blackface?).

Drag really is men celebrating what they love about women and amplifying that. Blackface is nothing but mocking and degrading a race of people. They are two VERY different things, in my opinion.

Go see Othello at the Metropolitan (or any opera company for that matter) and I'll bet the title character is being played by a white man in blackface. Is that wrong? Hell no. Does anyone find it offensive? Not that I know of.

But then opera had color blind casting decades before Broadway did.

I adore Dame Edna. I think she's hysterical! And I loved Dame Edna's Neighborhood Watch.
