I think Tonya can't sing.
I am actually glad that I saw it before the cast recording was released. I think, for me, the impact was stronger. I found myself counting the days until its release after I saw it and was standing at the Virgin Records front entrance here in Denver waiting for them to open the day it was released! I sat and listened to it twice through when I got home. A few of the songs stuck in my head after seeing it, "I Hate The Bus", "Salty Teardrops" (I was still wiping the tears from "Lot's Wife" during the beginning of "Teardrops"!), Moon, Emmie and Stuart Trio and especially "I Saw Three Ships". And the final moments with Ms. Rose left me with goosebumps.
I saw Tonya the year before in "House of Flowers" at Encores! I thought she was pretty bad, and her voice was weak.
I like her on All My Children, tho.
This is not to look down on the original poster in any way, but I feel that if you didn't like the show, you missed the point.
"but I feel that if you didn't like the show, you missed the point."
Sooooo..if I didn't like Wicked, then I missed the point?
But WICKED doesn't have a point.
Yes, it does.
Monarchy bad, green-hued dissidents, good.
As for Tonya, I was NEVER a fan. No to her acting, no to her voice.
Until I saw Caroline. I think she was this decade's tour-de-force performance a la Lansbury in Mame, Merman in Gypsy, and Channing in Dolly.

Not even in TWP, singer?
Say it ain't so! Just say it ain't so!
Yeah, no. I thought she was kind of weak in it. Then again, I couldn't take my eyes of of Toni in that.
Let's not mention Toni Collette. Everytime I think of her I get so angry that she did not receive a Tony for that performance.
And Tonya Pinkins was brilliant through and through in COC. She deserved that Tony.
See, I kind of have to mention her (sorry to go off-topic). I wanted to throw a hammer at the TV when she effectively lost that Tony.
***back on topic***
Tonya should have had that Tony in the bag for Caroline. In the bag.

And you know she expected to win.
I mean, bitch wore a TIARA.
Like any of us wouldn't have?
Oh well yeah.

Rath - I'm friends with one of her exes, and apparently the tiara isn't all that unusual
I love this show. Life is mainly comprised of small moments, and this piece took small moments and tied them into the web that binds us all - artistically and beautifully.
LOL!! Good to know!!

This is a very hard show to understand. I needed to listen to the cast recording a few times to get the point of the show before I saw it. I honestly think that the reason it's so complicated is why it flopped.
I disagree. You just have to pay close attention. I hadn't heard the CR before I saw it, though I had seen Lot's Wife on the Tonys, and wished I hadn't. It made the number anticlimactic in context.
Other than that, I loved the show. And the cast.

Rath, you are my favorite.

How the hell they ever got that tiara and hair under the Caroline wig - screw the Dreamgirls quick changes...
The reason it flopped is tourists don't care about a grumpy old maid. If it were just that simple...
No no, I'm a grumpy old maid.
Caroline is a grumpy maid.

It's very upseting to hear that someone didn't like this amazing masterpiece, but I have to agree that the first time I saw it..I really didn't get it. It was not until the second time and listening to the cd that I learned to understand it and love it. Which made me go to the theater to see it more and more to see the different cast members. To say that Tonya can't sing is going some, this show is vocally demanding but she CAN sing, I just think it might be easier for someone with a higher range. I would say give the show a chance and see it again, this is NOT a tourist show. You have to love theater I THINK...to really understand it...and when you do...you learn that this is a work of art and I have to say one of my top picks for musicals.

No, Rath.
She was 39. In 1963.

Well, it's not ALL about tourists, but it was certainly a show that was not appealing to a lot of out-of-towners.
I think what ultimately led to the show's demise were it's mixed reviews and it's heavy subject matter. It's not an easy show to digest and understand, and it sure as hell isn't a good old time at the theatre. It's a shame that it didn't last.
