I was online looking at tickets for the performance of Hair tonight. I had noticed that there was a second row seat on the aisle for the taking at full price. Having seen the show and having just by good fortune to sit in the first row twice (of course not having paid for the seat at that price, just lucked out) I figured, that if the same seat was offered via a Broadwaybox discount code that I would indulge despite the fact that it might be going a little over my budget.
When I went to Broadwaybox.com to get the discount code, I noticed that there were not any seats in the orchestra being sold with the discount code and that the best one I could get was in the front Mezz. Now, I do wonder, why is it that they would have no problem selling me a discount ticket in the Mezz when it is good for orchestra seats specially when there are still a handful of orchestra seats that are yet to be sold?
because they'd rather get full price for the orchestra seats? and some of those seats are probably premium.

Yeah, dancingthrulife has it right.
Most discount codes, whether they mention this in the fine print or not, don't apply to the first half-dozen or so rows of seats in the Center Orchestra.
This varies, of course, but don't expect to get a front-row center seat for half price.
The discount is not always available for every seat in the house. Additionally, they can decide that they will only sell a certain number AT the discount price regardless of where they are.
If they can sell tix at full price...they will. I tried to help a friend get Lotto tix for this last week....twice. Both times at least 20 people that lost simply went to the box office to buy tix at full price.
Discount codes generally have limitations; they'll only be valid for certain seats or days of the week, for example.
Once before I had a student discount for 9 to 5 and I asked the guy at the box office if he had any orch seating left for the 2 pm show (saturday) and he said sure. So I go to pull out my coupon and he says I cant use it. I asked why if their were seats left, and he told me that the discount said specifically (yet in very small fine print) "Select Orchastra Seats" and that he had sold out of those.

Yeah, it varies. I bought tickets for [title of show] from broadwaybox and sat in the second row, immediate center.

I got a half-off discount ticket to God of Carnage, and sat front row center.
It's one of my greatest achievements.
ChristopherDurangFan, when was that? During previews? I can't recall there being a discount for orchestra seats for God Of Carnage.
I used a discount code ($59, I think) the day before God of Carnage opened and was in the fifth row of the orchestra.
Ah yes, you're right. I remember now: I got my ticket for one of the previews a day or two before the discount code was released. Grrr... It was worth full price though. :)
