I found audio of the missing Evita Derin Altay the first replacement

I've always been curious about her. All the other regular Evitas are on youtube (Patti, Loni Ackerman, Florence Lacey) and there is audio of alternate Teri Klausner and video of Valerie Perri (alternate.) 

 

I've never been able to find Altay anywhere. I always heard she wasn't very good but this audio indicates otherwise. She's quite strong vocally and diction wise (sorry Patti.) 

It just showed up on youtube the other day. 

Now Nancy Opel remains the only one I haven't found. (She was an alternate for a long time.) 

Altay had an odd reuptation for some reason I always heard she wasn't great and the show got better once Loni Ackerman took over. But she's great here and I can see why Prince choose her to be the first replacement. 

 

I did read that once the considered all the stage Evitas for a film and Altay was the favorite. (she was the prettiest and it was a film so close up mattered I guess. She had the chops though too it seems.)

YouTube links have been well accepted here for over a decade.  Even artists and news sources use YouTube content that was once seen as unacceptable but those days are long gone.  Artists clamor for bootleg footage of their work as for many that’s the only video document they have of their work.

Her "Buenos Aires" is unremarkable. It lacks passion IMO.

Not true.  Till as recently as two years ago they were being deleted .

I would guess that Weber probably auditioned all the Broadway Evitas for Grizabella. I mean Paige played both parts in London so the demands are similar. 

 

He doesn't mention who he considered in his autobiography. He just says the hired Betty based on an incredible audition and then throughout previews she sang the song a thousand different ways and he was pulling his hair out and saying just do it like at the audition. He says Buckley as an actor who obsesses over every minor detail. I think that worked with Grizabella. Nobody ever brought as many layers and depth to the role than she did. 

 

I always wondered if Buckley auditioned for Evita. She was on Eight is Enough at the time so maybe not. She must have wanted it though. She sounds like she was pretty unhappy during that show.
