As a HUGE Billie Holiday fan, I'm going to have to say that, Academy Award nomination or not, I was very displeased with Diana Ross's performance as Billie Holiday. Physically, she wasn't right for the role. Billie Holiday was a solid woman, not very slender like Ross. I could put that aside though if her performance was up to par, but it wasn't. I personally don't feel she did give a Academy worthy performance and I don't think the characterization of Holiday was totally accurate. Not pleased that they used Ross vocals instead of Holiday vocals (They have a massively different vocal style, For God's sake!) Complain or whatever, I think it was a showcase for Diana Ross, and not an real story about Billie Holiday. The depth of emotion Holiday possessed was lacking in her performance. In my collection of Billie Holiday memorabilia, there is not a spot for that version. There was talk of a remake a while ago. I eagerly await it.

I love you to Mia.

I was just trying to use a parallel of circumstances and situations. How in some instances people are quick to judge, jump the gun without giving someone a chance.

I don't claim that Beyoncé is the greatest singer in the world (no one is), but the girl CAN SING, there is no disputing that. She is immensely talented and I believe her talents are tailored made for this role and I think she will be a great "Deena". That's where I'm coming from.

I'm not a Beyonce fan, but she's actually perfect for Deena. It would be nice if they let Frenchie do Effie. As far as Lorrell, there will never be another Loretta Devine!!!

Funny I just read this post. I was listening to Dreamgirls on my commute to work today. I think Beyonce would be very good as Deena.

Now we need to get an ownknown for EFFIE. or not a star name. I really think it should be someone like Jennifer Hudson or Frenchie Davis.

I am not a Beyonce fan at all but... if she has the part she has it.Let's just hope she does a good job.
I want this movie to do well no matter who's in it.

Any actress taking this part would have to change their hairstyle. Check out the Vibe magazine cover that Destiny's Child did back in 2001. They billed them as the "New Supremes" and had them in the black bobs, with Beyonce in the middle looking like Diana Ross.

{Those same people seem to think that Beyonce has acting talent as well. The only good thing she's at is fooling people into thinking she's some saint.}


Silent, my refrence to Christina Milian was because I don't see her appeal. I wouldn't put her in the same category with Beyonce because Beyonce is a major music star, so I could see producers trying to take advantage of that in order to sell tickets. Milian, on the other hand, has had two flop CDs. So, I'm assuming she isnt getting casted by name. Most likely, it's for her beauty, cuz from what I've seen from her, her acting skills are on par with her singing skills.

1st off...BelleHarper, I agree with you on her Academy Awards performances. She made me shudder during 2 out of the three songs she sang. I have heard her sing better live. I am no big fan but it can't be denied that she is talented. I really don't care to see her as Deena. I will admit that I have not seen any of her movies because the types of films she has done do not appeal to me. And seeing clips of her was enough for me. But who knows, she might suprise us all. And I hope she does as we have waited a very long time for this movie. I also read somewhere that Usher has expresssed an interest in doing the movie also. I just hope this doesn't become a showcase for the current group of hot R&B/Hip Hop artists. I wouldn't mind seeing Heather Headly do Lorell. I can't think of anyone I would like to see do Effie other than Jennifer, but since we know that probably won't happen, I think they should introduce someone new in the part. Just my opinion.

The idea of Beyonce as Deena is starting to grow on me. I'm actually excited to see her performance. I really wish that they would hire Fantasia as Lorell. I think she would be perfect.I also wish that Countess Vaughn was a little smaller and taller because she would also be perfect for Lorell.

Beyonce' was PERFECT as in the famous words of Oprah during her Oscar's performances. Just great.

Now that aside...I believe Deena is the perfect role for Beyonce'. I am sure Condon will do some extra things with her character as well....haha....why not! Beyonce' is a very sweet young lady who has the passion for singing. She is was a very shy girl and now young lady...she was and is a quite person....

But Dreamgirls is what she has been waiting for all her life. She has stated how when she was a little girl she would listen to Dreamgirls all the time and dream of being one of them...well another one of her dreams have come true.... She will suprise alot of people with a stella performance.

They haven't finished casting.
It's only October....
They haven't even started rehearsals.
They have another 2-3 months.

She has a leading part...but the REAL lead, around which the story revolves, is Effie White...and her part hasn't been cast yet.

Beyonce is playing Deena Jones.
