Not giving up on Broadway, but giving up on the Tony's!
Drowsy wins book, score and technical awards and doesn't get best musical?
Spelling Bee wins best book, Piazza wins best score and Spamalot wins best musical?
Urinetown wins best book, best score AND best direction and Millie (MILLIE?) wins best musical?
The Tony's are meaningless marketing drivel.

I will refrase what I said: I won't give up on GOOD Broadway but I will give up on BAD Broadway.
And I respect all of your opinions even thought I don't agree with a lot of them. So how dare you put me down and tell me I'm wrong.
I think the direction Broadway is heading in is a bad bad road. I was watching the Golden Age dvd and at the end the guy says, "Hollywood used to come to Broadway, not the other way around." Not anymore.
And I'm not JUST upset about Patti loosing, I'm upset with a lot of the other choices the Tony voters made.
i think I gave up on the Tony's last year when Norbert Leo Butz won over Gary Beach, but we won't get into that right now.
"And what was that with Phantom? Someone explain to me why wedding singer got to perform an entire number when a fantastic show like The Phantom of the Opera, which broke records just a few months ago had, oh, about 3 SECONDS??!!!"
That is EXACTLY what I said to my mom. It's not everyday that a show runs for 20 years. Edit: a GOOD show.

Jazzysuite82 I think you got confused. Hehe.
Actually it was a typo, I was gonna use three examples. It was late . The point still stands.

When schlocky, amateur junk like the score to THE DROWSY CHAPERONE can take home a prize, it's time to abolish the Tonys altogether. 'Distinguished achievement in theater," my ass.

"After tonight's horrific display of 'Broadway' shows, I am done."
Ok, bye.
If you're surprised by last night's outcome, you know very little about the history of Broadway.
"Jersey Boys!?!?! WHAT!?!?!? it's a ****ing concert on stage!"
That's not an opinion. It's an incorrect statement. Jersey Boys is not a concert. Technically, it's not even a "jukebox musical". The fact that you don't like it is an opinion.
"And what was that with Phantom? Someone explain to me why wedding singer got to perform an entire number when a fantastic show like The Phantom of the Opera, which broke records just a few months ago had, oh, about 3 SECONDS??!!!"
Probably because Phantom did its entire segment in 1988 when it was nominated and won the Tony. The Wedding Singer, like it or not, was nominated for Best Musical and therefore earned its moment to shine. Phantom was tossed a bone simply because of Hal Prince's award, but the broadcast didn't have to provide any numbers from the show seeing as how it was not nominated for anything last night. Many shows have broken the longest running record on Broadway without having a feature number on the Tonys. Most of them, in fact.
"It's not everyday that a show runs for 20 years. Edit: a GOOD show."
Except Phantom has yet to run for 20 years on Broadway. Perhaps when it does, we will get to watch yet another number we've already seen 1000 times. Perhaps you had better provide your personal definitions of what is GOOD and what is BAD and how will you give up on one or another without seeing them first to determine if they are GOOD or BAD?

Well, I have to add my $0.02 and say that overall, the awards were handed out to a respectful variety of shows and performers. Some I agree with, others I don't.
1. Best Musical
JERSEY BOYS winning the top prize is the now expected result of the lowering of the bar for "Broadway" musicals. Give the award to the show that can best be packaged and sold, not the best show. Not an hour after the awards ended, I saw a "Ronco"-type commecrial for the JB cast recording. Need any more proof? It even had the "crawl" of song titles going up the screen as the overly-enthusiastic announcer told us of all the Four Seasons hits included on the CD. Clearly, Tony realizes that the real awards of merit goes to the librettist, composer, lyricist and technical staff of a show. The Best Musical prize is no more than a marketing tool now, and is totally superfluous.
Best Actor:
My prediction: This clown will never ever set foot upon a broadway stage again. He'll get a mediocre, one-season-long TV show and move to the west coast and never repay the honor bestowed on him by giving back to the theatre. It's happened before. Remember Ben Harney in Dreamgirls?
Best Actress:
Finally! An award I can get behind. Even though I don't believe I understood one word sung in the COLOR PURPLE selection(s) on the telecast, I thought LaChanze was destined for a Tony ever since I saw her in RAGTIME in LA. Patti's performance was all about Patti (as usual) and the voters saw through her. I'd have liked LaChanze to have done more than gape open-eyed-and-mouthed throughout the "Hell, No" song, however.
Best Book and Score:
Obviously, in DROWSY CHAPERONE, the Best Score and Book of the year won: JERSEY BOYS was a jukebox show, original script or not. I mean: "I'm like dat bunny on TV wit da batteries; I jus' keep goin' an' goin' an' goin'" is NOT award-calibre writing. So many people on this board bitch about the lack of original writing, and then rejoice that the most unoriginal piece of the year has won Best Musical. One afterthought: I actually enjoyed the WEDDING SINGER number; last nights telecast was the first thing I'd heard from the show. Stephen Lynch was energetic and charming, the number was fast and fun and at least they didn't have a horn section crossing a catwalk like a funeral procession to stand and sway like idiots.
Best Revival:
Was the number from THREEPENNY OPERA supposed to be gripping and sensuous? All I saw was a bunch of people screaming at each other in slow-motion. And was there a point to the slashes across the eyes? And why was Michael McKean not asked to perform during the PAJAMA GAME sequence?! And hallelujah PG was the best revival winner; I was wholly underwhelmed by the SWEENEY TODD sequence. Maybe it plays better in person.

Oprah had nothing to do with LaChanze winning...whatsoever.
LaChanze has talent and put her heart and soul into that role and deserved it wayyyyy more than anyone else in that category.
I don't even see where your logic comes in that her winning had something to do with Oprah.
She may have helped the show out money-wise but she didn't affect LaChanze's talent.

Posted: 6/12/06 at 12:18pmIf you want my opinion, every single new musical that has been produced this century so far except for "The Producers" and "Wicked", (and that's only because of its teen fanbase) are gonna be remembered as being amoung the greatest, which is a shame, because Wicked, although its shows are fun to sing in the car, is nowhere near the same calibar as, let's be honest, other great musicals, such as "South Pacific" or "Cabaret", and "The Producers", while funny. . . .is just a bunch of nostalega (spelling?) for the Golden Age of Broadway (No wonder it does so well at the box office. . .). It's also a shame, because Broadway really needs to start churning out good material, and quite frankly, "Spamalot" (from what I've heard of Spamalot) and "Mamma Mia" just doesn't cut it.

MisterRussell, Are you talking about John Lloyd Young, because if you are you are horribly mistaken. John deserved that award and every other award he has earned, along with his caricature at Sardi's and I honestly think that he'll be apart of the Broadway community for many years, and he's such a nice guy at that, why do you have to attack such a nice guy.

Posted: 6/12/06 at 12:20pmLaChanze leapt into focus in her first leading role in Once on This Island and Broadway has been waiting for a proper vehicle to provide her with a Tony. I believe that is how she won this season. She delivered a head-turning performance in a high-profile, if mediocre, musical. I believe Tony voters have been waiting for the opportunity to reward her for her talent. The Color Purple provided it.

Because there was a better musical on Broadway this year - the one that won best book and best score.
And because there were better actors in leading roles!
It's that simple.
And people are disheartened when people who don't deserve to win (GWB) end up winning.
