Menzel deserved the Tony about as much as Hugh Jackman deserved his that year.

Idina has bad vocal techniques and I just focus on them when I listen to her these days.

Then again add me to the crowd that LOVES cast recordings but is absolutely non-plussed by any original album released by a Broadway leading lady or man. I just find them 'bleh' (or in the case of Debbie Gibson - creepy).

"You should be thankful. It's not every day I choose to put a member quote in my signature."

So I have now joined the ranks of people such as...?

Sweetie, learn to take a joke. The "I'm Spartacus" at the end of the sentence should have indicated it was meant to be taken in a light-hearted way.

Unless, of course, you have something against the "I'm Spartacus" icon.

Once again, here we discussing Idina's theatre work when the thread is about her album. It's sad how many people are determined to hate her and the fans that suppot her I'm Spartacus

How can they see with sequins in their eyes?

Yes I am buying her album. This Idina hate is idiotic. If she didn't deserve that Tony, she wouldn't have gotten it. Of course though, YOU know better than all of the Tony judges combined.

Then please explain to me how (recent examples) THE PAJAMA GAME beat SWEENEY TODD for Best Revival or SPAMALOT beat any of the other nominees for Best Musical. It's politics. WICKED is huge and they knew it wasn't going to take home Best Musical (due to AVENUE Q's...tactics) so they gave her Best Actress (though, I would have preferred to see Chenoweth take it over Menzel, if it HAD to be from WICKED). The Tony committee f*cks up, just like the rest of us. Updated On: 3/28/07 at 12:15 PM

While there may be some politics, I don't think there is so much that it would sway the final decision. If it works like the theatre awards down here, than the judges have their own little sheet where they vote for who they think should win. I don't think there is any discussing with the other judges at all, or if not, that much. Updated On: 3/28/07 at 12:25 PM

Did Debbie Gibson release a solo album after she was on Broadway? I used to rock out to "Out of the Blue" on my yellow Walkman when I was 7.

Back on topic... I personally think Idina is extremely talented, and a gorgeous person. I've been a fan of her since long before Wicked and I definitely plan to buy her new album as soon as it's released. And in case you can't tell from my Debbie Gibson anecdote, I'm well beyond high school age.

Cierra, that's ridiculous. Everyone knows award shows are political , and there have been many idiotic decisions, especially in the history of the Tonys.

But I happen to be in the seemingly small crowd that saw all of the nominees that year and genuinely believes Menzel deserved it. I think it could have gone to either her or Tonya Pinkins--both were phenomenal.

Of course it does. I'm not arguing whether or not Idina deserved the Tony. But to say that politics don't affect the decision is ridiculous. From Making It On Broadway:

"There are four unspoken criteria for Tony voters. Number one is, vote in your best interest. I'll scratch your back if you scratch mine. Number two is, vote against your enemies, Vote against shows you don't want to succeed. Number three is, vote for your friends. The last criterion is, vote for the best show." -Hunter Foster

"This table, he is over one hundred years old. If I could, I would take an old gramophone needle and run it along the surface of the wood. To hear the music of the voices. All that was said." - Doug Wright, I Am My Own Wife

Meh, I just get so used to the cynical jerks on this board who clearly have no sense of humor and are determined to hate everyone and everything. But I am now leaving this thread and never coming back. I love Idina, I think she's phenomenally talented and I will buy her album because I love her music. Some people here need to get over themselves and get a life.

I love Idina but I'm not buying her CD. I never was that interested in her soloist work.

LOL. The thread is titled Idina Menzel, not Wicked, and the original poster didn't even mention Idina's theatre work, let alone Wicked. Can you read? That's a lovely little rant on Wicked, Perfectly Marvelous, and I'm certainly no fan of the show, but Idina Menzel does not equal Wicked.

The funny thing about this thread is that I can't even remember the last time a thread was started about Idina Menzel, so I'm not sure what the problem is. If you hate Menzel and clicked on this thread just to pick on a young fan, I'm more inclined to laugh at you than the original poster. These days, Menzel is hardly the over-discussed topic on this board--and even if it was, get over it and get a life. It's so much more pathetic to see people obsessing over some young theatre fan's enthusiasm for a show than it is to see the enthusiasm, no matter how overzealous, itself.

Wow, way to try and attack me! I appreciate it, really I do.

And yes, sweetheart, I can read. The problem is, when you bring up Menzel, you also are going to, at some point, bring up Wicked. Obviously, I know she has done more than that, and I certainly don't despise her simply for her role or show choices. Actually, I have nothing against any of the actors who were or are currently in Wicked.

The fact is, every day on here and other musical related forums, people are getting attacked far worse than my simple "opinion" towards a particular matter. So if you want to critize me of being a cynical old twat with no compassion towards younger members, then go ahead and do so, no one's stopping you.

I sincerely apologize that my craptastic day that day let me ruin what might have been an otherwise pleasant thread. In the future, I will reserve my comments until I am in a better state mentally and physically.

One last note -

I truly do not have any grudge against people who like Idina. I've stated it before and I will say it again, I do not despise the woman at all. Honestly, if you asked for my opinion on her, I would say she's a talented lady. Not saying I love her to pieces but I think she is talented.

There. I'm done. No more will you have to deal with the horrible, cynical beast known to many as Perfectly Marvelous.
