Appently at the June 13 performance of WICKED, Idina did the whole first act and then got sick so the understudy Eden did the second act. Was anyone elde there? Isn't this weird? I wonder how many poeple in the audience noticed they changed actors.
This happens occasionally, J. I would imagine they made an announcement and didn't simply stick Eden onstage and hope no one would notice.
yeah, i've seen that happen. when i saw les miz on tour, the actor playing javert was sick and they switched during intermission. they announced it and there was a delay in the start of act 2 so the understudy could get ready.
Yep same thing happened at Bat Boy when I saw it. Angela Puppello (sp?) replaced Kerry Butler. Also, the stewards were switched in Into the Woods. Updated On: 7/4/04 at 09:45 PM
I think Harvey Fierstein only missed half a performance because he left at intermission.
Oh, and congrats J.! You said Idina Menzel, and not Idinal Menza!
I was at AIDA Friday (adam you diva - getting caught in traffic shame :) ) and these two girls behind me kept talking about when they saw "eye-dina" in this. They would not shut up. I have a bit of OCD when it comes to pronuciations of names. It drove me nuts!
God, me too. Especially when they're saying the name of the person on national TV. You'd think they could double-check the pronunciation. I hope Idina's not sitting at home cringing.
Eden's Idina's *stand-by*, not understudy.
Eye-dina I can understand. I will never understand how people get Indina Menzel...(ex: Jane Krakowski at Broadway on Broadway) Updated On: 7/4/04 at 10:08 PM
The two things that really irritate me are these spellings:
"Richard Rogers" and "Steven Sondheim"
At least i am not the only one. I hate correcting people because i dont want to come off like an obsessed fan who has to tell people that the way they are pronouncing their beloved actor's/actress'sit is wrong. Its just a general thing.
When i saw wicked on june 12th, kristin chenoweth did the first act then during intermission they made an announcement that laura bell bundy would take over because "she is unable to finish the show" Im sure they did hte same thing with idina and eden.
I saw "Wicked" back in February and thought it was outstanding. I'm going to try to go again very soon.
Kristin and Idina did both acts today and it was incredible.
Great show!
Got to meet Kristin backstage. Kathy Nijimi was at the show and backstage as well.
Kristin is a living doll, an angel. So kind!
That's pretty cool. Neil Patrick Harris was at the performance I saw a few months back. He came out the stage door and I think he was pissed because no one wanted his autograph.

What's the difference between understudy and stand-by?
now picture this...an episode of the sporanos with Kristin "in" for James Gandolfini... (spelled wrong I'm sure, not the thread to do that in )
An understudy has another role in the show that they do every night. A stand-by doesn't... using a stand-by prevents the "ripple affect" that using an understudy creates; when an understudy goes on, someone has to replace the understudy, and so on and so forth. With a stand-by, that doesn't happen.
How'd I do guys?
Good job Emcee. Understudies get paid for performing. If they suck, I'm sure they can get fired. Stand-by's are paid for BEING there, and sometimes they perform. If they don't show up, that could get them fired.
YAY!
It took me *forever* to get that straight.
Also, the people who cover understudies in the ensemble when said understudies are...well...understudying, are swings.
(Although sometimes swings also understudy non-ensemble roles as well.)
