Yes I know, another Idina post, oh joy, but I think that her performance at The Zipper deserves it's own post.
I just came home from one of the most entertaining evenings I've had in a long time. I know I heard the name Broadwayworld being bandied about several times which made me smile.
But it was Idina who made me smile more and cry for that matter. For all I know it could all be just a really good act, but what I saw from her tonight was a strange hybrid of knowing she's talented but still being insecure with having that knowledge. She's a self-deprecating, rambling storyteller with a mouth like a truck driver and somehow that makes her seem as fallible as the rest of us and very entertaining. I think it's the idolation people have for her that often gets in the way of just appreciating her performance.
Whether she was bawling during the story of her sister or laughing at her own nonsense as a wedding singer it's really easy to understand how she engages people night after night.
Then there was her voice, which was in fine form tonight. I especially enjoyed the different arrangements of Defying Gravity and I'll Cover You from Rent. Though I think my personal favorite moment was I Have A Love from West Side Story. It was great to hear her perform some of her own music as well and listen to what felt almost like reading someone's journal brought to life by song. Loved her rocking out to Lenny Kravitz as well.
I was glad the subject of the recent threats to her and Taye weren't glossed over but were rather handled with a dignified acknowledgment and even a passing joke. I'm glad to see her trying to move beyond that with a song.
All in all, what it comes down to is that I think I appreciate her more now because of the flaws she's not afraid to reveal which lets me appreciate the soaring moments when she hits it out of the park with aplomb and grace even more.
